Chapter 4 - Evelyn’s Last Recording

Daniel connected the flash drive to an offline laptop.
The video opened with darkness.
Then Evelyn Valle appeared.
She was sitting inside her study.
Charlotte had forgotten how much she resembled her mother.
Same gray-green eyes.
Same habit of pressing her lips together when frightened.
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“If Charlotte sees this, then I failed to stop them.”
Charlotte covered her mouth.
Sebastian leaned forward.
Evelyn continued.
“Nathaniel and Margaret created shell companies to steal from the foundation and international development accounts.”
Sebastian’s jaw tightened.
“They used my father’s credentials.”
Charlotte looked at Sebastian.
He appeared suddenly older.
Then Evelyn said something none of them expected.
“They also changed Charlotte’s medical and financial records.”
Charlotte frowned.
The video continued.
“My daughter must never be declared unstable, incompetent, missing, or voluntarily estranged from this family.”
Charlotte felt cold.
Those exact words had followed her for years.
When she tried contacting Valle International after leaving New York, assistants told her the family had been advised not to communicate with her.
Later, accounts opened under her name had been closed.
A landlord once rejected her because a background report described a history of financial instability.
She had assumed the damage came from grief and bad luck.
It had been manufactured.
Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.
“They need Charlotte removed because her trust becomes active at twenty-five.”
Charlotte looked at Sebastian.
“I was twenty-two when Mom died.”
Sebastian nodded slowly.
“If you remained legally connected to the family, you would have received control three years later.”
Evelyn’s voice continued.
“Nathaniel believes Charlotte’s shares will eventually give her enough voting power to challenge him.”
The video suddenly shook.
Evelyn looked toward the door.
Someone knocked.
She whispered, “Daniel, hide this.”
The recording ended.
Charlotte turned toward the hotel manager.
“You were there.”
Daniel nodded.
“I was outside the study.”
“Who knocked?”
“I never saw.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn ordered me through another door.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“She said protecting the evidence mattered more than protecting her.”
Charlotte’s eyes filled.
“You listened to her?”
“I thought she was being paranoid.”
He lowered his voice.
“The next morning she was dead.”
The room went silent.
Charlotte had always been told Evelyn suffered a fatal heart attack.
Sebastian looked at Daniel.
“Are you suggesting my daughter was murdered?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m saying Evelyn feared someone enough to record that message.”
Charlotte closed the laptop.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I’m done guessing.”
She gathered the documents.
“We find out exactly what happened.”
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed almost immediately.
Security had checked Nathaniel’s suite.
Nathaniel Valle was gone.
May you like
And Margaret Hayes had disappeared with him.
