Chapter 1 - The Envelope in the Canvas Bag

Sebastian Valle’s words settled over the lobby like smoke.
“Eight years of your life.”
Charlotte stared at her grandfather, searching his face for some sign that he was exaggerating.
She found none.
Margaret Hayes slowly backed away from the scattered belongings on the marble floor.
That movement was small, but Charlotte noticed it.
So did Sebastian.
He pointed toward the battered canvas bag.
“Pick it up, Charlotte.”
Charlotte crouched beside it.
Her hands were still shaking from the slap, but anger had burned away most of the humiliation.
She gathered her notebook, sweater, water bottle, and the old envelope she had carried through three apartments and two shelters.
The envelope had belonged to her mother, Evelyn Valle.
Charlotte had found it among Evelyn’s possessions after the funeral eight years earlier.
It contained nothing except a faded photograph and a handwritten note Charlotte had never understood.
Sebastian extended his hand.
“May I see it?”
Charlotte hesitated.
“You know what this is?”
“I know what it was supposed to contain.”
Margaret suddenly stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Sebastian turned.
“You will not speak again unless I ask you a question.”
Margaret froze.
Around them, hundreds of gala guests pretended not to stare.
Daniel Reed quietly ordered security to close the lobby doors.
Nobody left.
Charlotte handed Sebastian the envelope.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was the photograph Charlotte remembered.
Her mother stood beside Sebastian in front of Valle International’s original headquarters.
On the back were five words.
FOR CHARLOTTE WHEN SHE RETURNS.
Sebastian’s face hardened.
“There should be a second page.”
Charlotte frowned.
“There never was.”
Sebastian looked at Margaret.
“There was when Evelyn gave it to me.”
Margaret’s lips parted.
Sebastian continued.
“Three days before Evelyn died, she signed a transfer placing twenty-eight percent of Valle International into a trust for Charlotte.”
A murmur moved through the lobby.
Charlotte almost laughed because the number sounded impossible.
Twenty-eight percent of Valle International was worth billions.
“My mother never told me.”
“She planned to.”
Sebastian’s voice broke slightly.
“She died before she could.”
Margaret shook her head.
“There was never any trust.”
Sebastian reached into his jacket.
He removed a folded document.
“Then explain why your signature appears on the petition that declared Charlotte legally unreachable eight years ago.”
Charlotte turned toward her aunt.
Margaret’s face had gone white.
Sebastian looked at Charlotte.
“That petition allowed someone else to control your inheritance.”
“Who?”
Sebastian did not answer.
Instead, he looked toward the ballroom entrance.
A man in a black tuxedo had appeared there.
Charlotte recognized him immediately.
Her uncle.
Nathaniel Valle.
The current CEO of Valle International.
And the man who had told Charlotte eight years earlier that Sebastian never wanted to see her again.
Nathaniel looked at the document in Sebastian’s hand.
Then he looked at Charlotte.

For the first time in her life, Charlotte saw fear in his eyes.
