Chapter 16 - The Woman Who Watched Her

Charlotte refused to hide.
Daniel wanted to move her to a secure residence.
Sebastian wanted private guards around her twenty-four hours a day.
Charlotte agreed to security but insisted on returning to the Valle Grand.
“That’s where Margaret humiliated me.”
She looked at Sebastian.
“That’s where I want her to see me standing.”
The forensic audit continued.
Northstar’s accounts were frozen.
Nathaniel’s voting authority was suspended.
Victor Hale agreed to testify.
Dr. Pierce surrendered records from Meridian Medical Center.
The case against Margaret grew stronger every hour.
But Margaret remained missing.
Then Charlotte remembered her notebook.
It had fallen from her canvas bag during the gala.
Inside were years of handwritten observations.
Addresses.
Job schedules.
Budget calculations.
And strange incidents Charlotte had never connected.
A landlord suddenly terminating her lease.
A manager firing her after receiving an anonymous complaint.
A bank account frozen for suspected fraud.
Each event happened shortly after Charlotte tried contacting anyone connected to Valle International.
Margaret had been systematically preventing her from becoming stable.
Why?
Adrian answered.
“Because if you built a permanent life, Sebastian might find you.”
Charlotte stared at him.
Margaret did not merely steal eight years.
She engineered them.
That realization hurt more than losing money.
Charlotte had blamed herself for every failure.
Every eviction.
Every rejection.
Every sudden collapse.
Now she understood someone had been pushing from the shadows.
Daniel entered her hotel suite carrying an old envelope.
“This was delivered downstairs.”
No sender.
Charlotte opened it.
Inside was a photograph taken during the gala.
Charlotte stood beside Sebastian.
A red circle surrounded Adrian in the background.
On the reverse were four words.
HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.
Adrian immediately requested additional security.
Charlotte studied the paper.
The handwriting seemed familiar.
She opened Evelyn’s old envelope.
FOR CHARLOTTE WHEN SHE RETURNS.
Same narrow letters.
Same sharp R.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“This wasn’t Margaret.”
Daniel frowned.
“How do you know?”
“Margaret didn’t write the message on Mom’s photograph.”
Someone else had.
They examined the original envelope.
Forensics found an old fingerprint beneath the flap.
The print matched neither Margaret nor Nathaniel.
It matched Martin Shaw.
The guard who started the fire.
Charlotte stared at the result.
Martin had handled Evelyn’s envelope eight years ago.
That meant he had been involved from the beginning.
Daniel searched old Valle employment archives.
Martin Shaw had another identity.
Marcus Pierce.
Dr. Howard Pierce’s younger brother.

And according to hospital records, Marcus had been working at Meridian Medical Center the night Evelyn died.
