Chapter 11 - The Man on the Water

The marina was surrounded before Nathaniel could leave.

Charlotte watched from inside Daniel’s SUV as officers boarded the yacht.

Nathaniel emerged twenty minutes later.

He was handcuffed.

He did not look defeated.

He looked amused.

When he saw Charlotte, he smiled.

“You found Father’s boat.”

Charlotte stepped forward.

“Adrian is alive?”

Nathaniel stopped smiling.

Sebastian arrived seconds later.

He walked toward his son.

“Where is your brother?”

Nathaniel said nothing.

Investigators searched the yacht.

They found passports.

Cash.

Encrypted drives.

And a satellite phone.

Daniel examined the recent call history.

One number had been contacted repeatedly.

The country code belonged to Portugal.

Sebastian looked at Charlotte.

“Adrian loved Portugal.”

Nathaniel laughed.

“You still think this is about stolen money.”

Charlotte turned.

“What is it about?”

Nathaniel’s expression hardened.

“Control.”

He claimed Evelyn had wanted Charlotte to inherit not twenty-eight percent, but controlling rights over the family voting trust.

Sebastian stared at him.

“That trust belonged to all my children.”

“Exactly.”

Nathaniel’s voice became bitter.

“You planned to divide everything.”

Charlotte understood the resentment.

Nathaniel had spent decades believing Valle International belonged to him.

Evelyn threatened that future.

Then Charlotte did.

“You drove me out because of shares?”

Nathaniel stepped closer despite the officers beside him.

“I gave you a chance to disappear quietly.”

Charlotte’s stomach twisted.

“A chance?”

“You were alive.”

Sebastian struck his cane against the dock.

“Enough.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“You always loved Evelyn more.”

Sebastian’s face changed.

Nathaniel continued.

“And even dead, she still wins.”

Authorities moved him toward a waiting vehicle.

Charlotte called after him.

“Did Margaret kill my mother?”

Nathaniel stopped.

For the first time, his confidence faltered.

He looked over his shoulder.

“I never saw Margaret poison anyone.”

Charlotte heard the careful wording.

“But?”

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“But I saw your mother alive six hours after everyone claims she died.”

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Sebastian stared at his son.

“What did you say?”

Nathaniel was placed inside the vehicle.

Before the door closed, he spoke one final sentence.

“Ask Daniel where Evelyn really died.”

The vehicle drove away.

Charlotte slowly turned toward Daniel.

Daniel looked horrified.

“I found Evelyn in her study.”

“When?”

“Just after midnight.”

“The official report says she died at six in the evening.”

Daniel stared at Sebastian.

Neither man had ever compared the times.

Charlotte felt cold.

Someone had moved Evelyn.

Someone had changed the timeline.

May you like

And somewhere between six o’clock and midnight, her mother had still been alive.
