Chapter 14 - The Archive Beneath the Estate

The old Valle estate stood forty miles north of Manhattan.
Charlotte had not returned since leaving eight years earlier.
The house looked smaller than memory.
The pain did not.
Adrian flew from Portugal under protection and arrived before midnight.
Charlotte saw him in person for the first time near the front steps.
Neither moved.
Adrian finally said, “You look like Evelyn.”
Charlotte answered, “That’s what everyone keeps telling me.”
No embrace followed.
Not yet.
Sebastian led them into the basement.
Behind the wine cellar stood a steel archive door.
Two locks.
Brass.
Silver.
Charlotte and Adrian inserted their keys simultaneously.
The door opened.
Inside were shelves of family records.
At the center sat a metal case labeled C.V.
Charlotte opened it.
The first document was a revised voting trust.
Evelyn had signed it.
Sebastian’s signature appeared below hers.
He stared at the page.
“I remember signing this.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I thought it was an education trust amendment.”
Nathaniel had apparently switched the cover pages.
The document granted Charlotte thirty-four percent voting control upon turning twenty-five.
Combined with Sebastian’s retained shares, she could block Nathaniel from ever controlling the company.
The second folder contained proof of Northstar’s theft.
The third contained letters.
One was addressed to Sebastian.
One to Adrian.
One to Charlotte.
Charlotte opened hers.
Evelyn wrote that inheritance was never supposed to be a reward.
It was a responsibility.
If Charlotte wanted Valle International, she should earn the right to protect the people whose livelihoods depended on it.
Charlotte read the final lines twice.
Do not become them simply because you defeat them.
The words stayed with her.
Then Daniel discovered a small cassette recorder.
The tape inside was dated the day Evelyn died.
They pressed play.
Margaret’s voice filled the archive.
“You should have stayed out of the accounts.”
Evelyn answered.
“You stole from charities.”
Nathaniel spoke next.
“You’re destroying this family over numbers.”
Charlotte’s blood ran cold.
Both of them had been there.
The recording continued.
A cup struck a table.
Evelyn said, “What did you put in this?”
Margaret replied quietly.
“Enough to make you stop.”
Sebastian turned away.
Charlotte could not.
She listened until Evelyn’s voice weakened.
Then Nathaniel said something that destroyed his final defense.
“Take her to Pierce.”
The recording ended.
Daniel immediately copied the file.
Then the basement lights went out.
A second later, smoke began pouring under the archive door.
Someone had locked them inside.
May you like
And the old estate was on fire.
