Chapter 19 - The Courtroom Reckoning

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters filled the hallway.

Nathaniel entered in a dark suit, no longer handcuffed.

He had been temporarily released pending the financial investigation.

Margaret remained in custody.

Sebastian sat beside Charlotte.

Nathaniel’s attorneys argued that Sebastian had become confused and vindictive.

They described Charlotte as an estranged granddaughter who had appeared suddenly and manipulated him.

Eight years of manufactured distance were now being used against her.

Charlotte expected anger.

Instead, she waited.

Nathaniel’s lawyer produced the forged will.

Then Robert Mason testified.

“Yes, I witnessed Mr. Valle sign it.”

Charlotte’s attorney stood.

“On February fourteenth?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Mr. Valle’s Manhattan office.”

The attorney displayed Sebastian’s flight records.

He had been in Paris.

Mason hesitated.

Then the manipulated video appeared.

The forensic expert explained the altered timestamp, composited background, and internal server records.

Mason’s confidence disappeared.

The judge ordered him not to leave.

Then Charlotte’s attorney played Evelyn’s archive recording.

Margaret’s voice filled the courtroom.

You should have stayed out of the accounts.

Nathaniel’s voice followed.

You’re destroying this family over numbers.

Then Evelyn asked what had been put in her drink.

Margaret answered.

Enough to make you stop.

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

The courtroom became completely silent.

Victor Hale testified next.

He admitted helping Nathaniel create shell companies and false board resolutions.

Dr. Pierce admitted falsifying medical records.

Marcus Pierce admitted moving Evelyn’s body.

Helena Brooks authenticated the ledger.

Finally, Adrian entered.

Nathaniel stared at the brother he had believed would never return.

Adrian testified about Evelyn’s final hours.

When he finished, Charlotte took the stand.

Nathaniel’s attorney tried to portray her as motivated by money.

“You expect this court to believe you returned for family rather than billions?”

Charlotte looked at him.

“I arrived with one canvas bag.”

A few reporters lowered their pens.

“I didn’t know the trust existed.”

She looked at Nathaniel.

“I came because my grandfather sent me an invitation.”

Then she looked at the judge.

“I survived eight years without Valle International.”

Her voice remained steady.

“What I want returned is not money.”

She paused.

“It is the truth.”

The judge denied Nathaniel’s emergency petition.

Sebastian retained control.

Charlotte’s trust was recognized pending final accounting.

Nathaniel’s temporary release was revoked after prosecutors filed additional charges related to witness tampering and fraud.

As officers approached him, Nathaniel looked at Charlotte.

“You think you won?”

Charlotte said nothing.

Nathaniel smiled.

“You still have to run the company.”

Charlotte understood the challenge.

Destroying him had been easier than repairing what he damaged.

May you like

And tomorrow morning, thirty-two thousand employees would look to the Valle family for an answer.
