Chapter 3 - Locker 417

The gala ended without music.
Sebastian canceled the anniversary celebration in front of five hundred guests.
By midnight, Charlotte was sitting in the back of Sebastian’s armored sedan beside Daniel Reed.
Sebastian sat opposite them.
Two security vehicles followed.
Margaret and Nathaniel remained inside the Valle Grand under guard while company attorneys arrived.
Charlotte watched Manhattan pass beyond the dark windows.
Eight years ago, she had left this city on a bus.
She had spent months working restaurant shifts in Philadelphia.
Later came Baltimore, Richmond, Atlanta, and Charlotte.
She had survived without using the Valle name.
Now she was returning to a secret her mother had buried beneath the city.
The private storage facility connected to Grand Central had been closed to the public for hours.
Sebastian’s attorneys obtained emergency access.
Locker 417 was narrow and old.
Charlotte inserted the brass key.
It turned.
Inside sat a black document case.
Nothing else.
Charlotte carried it into a nearby office.
Sebastian did not touch it.
“This belongs to you.”
Charlotte opened the latches.
The first document was Evelyn’s trust agreement.
Charlotte’s name appeared throughout it.
The second was a handwritten letter.
My dearest Charlotte.
If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.
Charlotte stopped breathing.
She continued.
Someone inside Valle International has been moving money through false development companies.
I discovered it accidentally while reviewing the family foundation accounts.
Nathaniel knows that I know.
Charlotte looked up.
Sebastian closed his eyes.
There were more pages.
Evelyn had documented transfers totaling one hundred eighty-seven million dollars.
Several were approved using Sebastian’s digital authorization.
Sebastian stared at the signatures.
“I never approved these.”
Daniel pointed toward the final folder.
Inside were photographs.
Margaret meeting with bank executives.
Nathaniel entering a private accounting office.
And one photograph Charlotte could not understand.
Her mother standing beside Daniel Reed.
Daniel looked twenty years younger.
Charlotte slowly turned toward him.
“You knew my mother?”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I worked security for her.”
Sebastian looked at him.
“You told me you had never met Evelyn.”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
Charlotte stood.
“Why did you lie?”
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He removed an old silver flash drive.
“Because your mother made me promise.”
Charlotte stared at it.
Daniel placed the drive on the table.
“She told me not to give this to anyone until Charlotte Valle came home willingly.”
Charlotte whispered, “What’s on it?”
Daniel looked at Sebastian.
Then back at Charlotte.
