Chapter 5 — The Woman Behind The Apron

Emily had imagined many ways this night could end.

She imagined Victoria crying.

She imagined Daniel realizing the truth.

She imagined justice.

But she never imagined standing in the center of a ballroom...

while hundreds of people looked at her like she was the villain.

The contract on Victoria's phone had changed everything.

The guests whispered again.

But this time, they weren't defending Emily.

They were questioning her.

"Who is she really?"

"Was this planned?"

"Was the recording fake?"

Daniel looked devastated.

"Emily."

His voice was quiet.

"Please explain."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth was complicated.

She wasn't a spy.

She wasn't working with Victoria.

But she also wasn't there by accident.

Three months earlier, Emily had applied for a simple waitress position.

She needed money.

She needed flexibility.

She never expected to discover anything.

But there was one thing nobody knew.

Emily's father had once worked for Hayes Industries.

His name was Thomas Carter.

And fifteen years ago...

he was blamed for a financial crime he didn't commit.

A crime that destroyed his reputation.

A crime that ended his career.

Everyone believed Thomas Carter stole millions from the company.

Including Daniel's father.

But Emily never believed it.

Because her father spent his final years trying to prove he was innocent.

And before he died, he left her one message.

"Find the truth."

That was why Emily accepted the catering job.

Not revenge.

Not destruction.

Answers.

She wanted to know what really happened.

But she never expected to discover Victoria.

Daniel stared at her.

"You knew about my family?"

Emily lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

The room erupted again.

Victoria smiled.

"There it is."

She turned toward the guests.

"The poor innocent waitress wasn't innocent at all."

Emily looked at her.

"You manipulated everything."

Victoria shrugged.

"Maybe."

Then she leaned closer.

"But nobody will believe you now."

And she was right.

Because Victoria had done something brilliant.

She had mixed truth with lies.

She exposed Emily's secret first.

She made herself look like the victim.

Daniel looked lost.

"I don't know who to believe."

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because Emily realized something.

Truth wasn't always enough.

Sometimes...

the first person to tell the story won.

Then suddenly—

a voice came from the back of the ballroom.

"That's exactly why you should listen to both sides."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood near the entrance.

Daniel froze.

"Dad?"

The entire room went silent.

Because everyone thought Richard Hayes had died two years ago.

But the man standing there...

was alive.

And he was holding a folder.

A folder with the original financial records from fifteen years ago.

He looked at Victoria.

Then Emily.

Then Daniel.

"I know who stole the money."

Victoria's face changed.

May you like

For the first time...

she looked terrified.
