Chapter 11 — The Family That Buried The Truth

The room became unbearable.
Too many secrets.
Too many lies.
Too many years of people pretending nothing happened.
Emily looked at Richard.
"You knew my father was innocent?"
Richard lowered his head.
"I suspected."
"Suspected?"
Her voice shook.
"You let everyone believe he was a criminal."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I was afraid."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"Afraid?"
She looked around the ballroom.
"Everyone here is afraid of something."
She pointed at Victoria.
"She's afraid of losing power."
Then at Alexander.
"He's afraid nobody will remember him."
Then Richard.
"And you're afraid of admitting what you did."
Nobody spoke.
Because Emily was right.
Daniel looked at his father.
"Why?"
Richard sat down slowly.
"Fifteen years ago, your grandfather built this company using illegal financial methods."
Daniel stared.
Richard continued.
"Thomas discovered it."
Emily listened carefully.
"He wanted to report everything."
"Then why wasn't he protected?"
Richard looked at the floor.
"Because your grandfather had powerful friends."
Emily felt tears forming.
Her father had spent years being hated for telling the truth.
Victoria suddenly interrupted.
"This is touching."
Everyone looked at her.
She was smiling again.
"Really."
She clapped slowly.
"A family finally admitting their crimes."
Daniel stared.
"You were part of this."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
The honesty shocked everyone.
"I never denied it."
Emily looked at her.
"Then why?"
Victoria's face changed.
For a moment...
the mask disappeared.
And Emily saw something else.
A wounded child.
"My father died ruined."
Her voice became quiet.
"Everyone called him a monster."
She looked at Richard.
"Because of your family."
Richard looked away.
Victoria continued:
"I spent years watching people who destroyed us live happily."
She looked at Daniel.
"And then I found the perfect way to take everything."
Daniel shook his head.
"You used me."
Victoria smiled sadly.
"I loved you."
A pause.
"At first."
That hurt him more than anger.
Because it was the closest thing to honesty she had given.
Then Alexander stepped forward.
"Enough."
Everyone looked at him.
He pulled out a small device.
Emily immediately recognized it.
A recording device.
"You all want the truth?"
He smiled.
"Fine."
He pressed a button.
A voice played.
A voice everyone recognized.
Richard Hayes.
The recording was from fifteen years ago.
And his words changed everything.
"I don't care what happens to Carter."
The ballroom froze.
Richard's face went pale.
The recording continued.
"Make sure he takes the blame."
Emily stopped breathing.
Because now...
there was proof.
Not suspicion.
Not rumors.
Proof.
Daniel looked at his father.
"Did you say that?"
Richard couldn't answer.
Alexander smiled.
"Welcome to the truth."
But then...
Emily noticed something.
Alexander looked too confident.
Almost like he wanted everyone to hear this.
Almost like this recording was part of his plan.
And then she saw it.
A tiny red light.
Blinking.
On the device.
A camera.
May you like
Alexander wasn't just recording.
He was recording everyone.
