Chapter 15 — The Last Secret

Three days later...

The world knew everything.

The story became national news.

The billionaire wedding that became a criminal investigation.

The fake pregnancy.

The stolen company.

The hidden son.

The murder investigation.

But one person remained missing.

Alexander Hayes.

Police searched everywhere.

Nothing.

No trace.

No evidence.

Until Emily found the clue.

Not from the police.

Not from Daniel.

From her father.

Inside an old box her mother had kept hidden.

There was a letter.

Written fifteen years ago.

For Emily.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her father's handwriting.

"Emily,

If you are reading this, it means the truth finally found you."

Tears filled her eyes.

The letter explained everything.

Thomas knew he was in danger.

He knew powerful people wanted him silent.

But he also knew something else.

Alexander wasn't his enemy.

He was a victim too.

A child abandoned by the same people who destroyed Thomas.

The final sentence made Emily stop breathing.

"I made one mistake."

"I trusted the wrong person."

Emily turned the page.

And saw a name.

The person Thomas believed betrayed him.

Not Richard.

Not Victoria.

Someone else.

Someone nobody suspected.

Daniel.

Emily dropped the letter.

No.

Impossible.

Daniel had been hurt.

Daniel had been betrayed.

Daniel wasn't part of this.

Or was he?

Suddenly, everything changed.

The kindness.

The confusion.

The perfect timing.

The way he protected Emily.

Was it real?

Or another performance?

That night, Emily went to see Daniel.

She found him alone inside the empty Hayes mansion.

"Daniel."

He turned.

And smiled sadly.

"I knew you would come."

Emily stopped.

"What did my father mean?"

Daniel said nothing.

Then slowly...

he walked toward a hidden drawer.

He removed a small envelope.

"I was hoping you would never find that."

Emily's heart sank.

"Find what?"

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

A photograph of Thomas Carter.

Richard Hayes.

And Daniel.

Together.

Fifteen years ago.

Emily stared.

"You were there?"

Daniel looked down.

"Yes."

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Because I knew everything."

Emily stepped back.

The man she thought was a victim...

had been hiding the truth all along.

Daniel looked at her.

"I didn't kill your father."

"But you knew."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Emily shook her head.

"From what?"

Daniel looked toward the dark mansion.

Then answered:

"From the person who has been controlling all of us from the beginning."

Emily whispered:

"Who?"

Daniel's face turned pale.

Then he said the name.

A name that made everything collapse.

"Your mother."

Emily stopped breathing.

Because behind Daniel...

someone moved in the darkness.

A woman stepped forward.

Evelyn Carter.

Alive.

And smiling.

"I was wondering when you would finally understand."

Emily stared.

"Mom?"

Her mother looked at her.

And said:

"I'm sorry, Emily."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

"I was never trying to expose the people who destroyed your father."

She smiled.

"I was trying to destroy them all."

The lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

And Emily realized the horrifying truth.

The wedding wasn't the beginning of the story.

It was the final move in a war that had started fifteen years ago.

And everyone...

Victoria.

Daniel.

Alexander.

Richard.

Even her own mother.

May you like

Had only been pieces on the same chessboard.

THE END.
