Chapter 14 — The Truth Emily Never Wanted

The wedding ended without a wedding.

The guests left quietly.

The flowers were removed.

The music stopped.

The beautiful ballroom became an empty room filled with broken promises.

But Emily couldn't leave.

Not yet.

Because one question remained.

Her mother.

Evelyn Carter.

Why had she hidden the truth?

She found her mother waiting outside.

The older woman looked exhausted.

Like she had carried a secret too heavy for too many years.

"Mom."

Evelyn looked up.

Emily's voice shook.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her mother started crying.

"Because I was afraid."

"Everyone says that."

Emily's voice became stronger.

"Everyone was afraid."

A pause.

"But I lost my father because people were afraid."

Evelyn looked down.

"You deserve the truth."

They sat together.

And Evelyn finally explained.

Fifteen years earlier...

Thomas Carter didn't work alone.

He had another partner.

Someone inside Hayes Industries.

Someone who had access to every secret.

Someone who helped him collect evidence.

Emily whispered:

"Who?"

Evelyn looked toward the mansion.

"Richard Hayes."

Emily froze.

"But he admitted he covered it up."

"Yes."

Evelyn nodded.

"But before that..."

She took a deep breath.

"He tried to help your father."

Emily listened.

"Richard discovered his own family was corrupt."

Evelyn continued.

"He wanted to expose them."

"Then why didn't he?"

"Because when he tried..."

someone threatened his children."

Emily looked confused.

"Daniel?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Alexander."

Emily felt cold.

The entire story changed again.

Alexander wasn't only a forgotten son.

He wasn't only a victim.

He was part of the reason everything collapsed.

Evelyn continued.

"Alexander knew everything."

Emily's eyes widened.

"He manipulated everyone."

"Yes."

"Even Victoria?"

Her mother nodded.

"Especially Victoria."

Emily thought back.

The recordings.

The documents.

The perfect timing.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Alexander didn't join Victoria's plan.

He created it.

Victoria was dangerous.

But Alexander was patient.

He had spent years waiting.

Then Daniel appeared.

The missing heir.

The forgotten son.

The perfect weapon.

Emily stood.

"I need to find him."

But before she could move...

her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A voice spoke.

Alexander.

"You finally figured it out."

Emily froze.

"Where are you?"

He laughed.

"Somewhere your family forgot."

"What do you want?"

A pause.

Then:

"Justice."

Emily looked around.

"Your justice destroyed innocent people."

Alexander's voice became cold.

"People always say that when they lose."

Then the call ended.

Emily stared at the phone.

Because in the background...

she heard something.

A sound.

May you like

A familiar sound.

A hospital monitor.
