Chapter 9 – The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For twenty-eight years...
Grace had imagined this moment.
Sometimes in dreams.
Sometimes in nightmares.
Sometimes in the quiet hours before sunrise when she wondered what her father would have looked like.
Would he have had her eyes?
Would he have laughed like her mother?
Would he have remembered her?
But never once...
Never once had she imagined standing inside a burning underground vault while armed FBI agents surrounded them and discovering that the man everyone told her was dead...
Was alive.
The stranger stood several feet away.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
But alive.
His eyes never left hers.
"Pumpkin..."
The nickname hit her harder than anything else that night.
Because she remembered.
Not clearly.
Not completely.
But enough.
A small wooden house.
A warm fireplace.
A man's arms lifting her into the air.
A deep voice singing the same lullaby she had just heard.
Grace covered her mouth.
"No..."
The man took a careful step forward.
"I know this is impossible to understand."
"Don't come closer."
Her voice cracked.
Everyone froze.
The man stopped.
Pain crossed his face.
"I deserve that."
Daniel moved between them.
"Who are you?"
The man's eyes shifted toward him.
"You must be Daniel Ashcroft."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You know me."
"I know your father."
The room became colder.
The man's voice lowered.
"And I know what he did."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"My father is dead."
The man looked at him sadly.
"Yes."
"He died believing he had won."
Grace stared at the man.
"Tell me your name."
A long silence passed.
Then he answered.
"Thomas Blackwood."
Grace's knees nearly gave out.
The name.
Her father's name.
The name she had searched for on old documents.
The name that supposedly belonged to a dead man.
Thomas looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry?"
Grace laughed weakly.
"You disappeared."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"You let me grow up thinking nobody wanted me."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Tears streamed down her face.
"You don't know what it feels like to wonder why your own father didn't love you enough to stay."
Thomas closed his eyes.
The words hurt him.
Because they were true.
"I didn't leave you because I wanted to."
"Then why?"
"Because if I stayed..."
He looked around the vault.
"...you would not have survived."
Emily watched silently.
For the first time, her confident expression disappeared.
Grace noticed.
"You knew."
Emily looked away.
"You knew he was alive."
Thomas answered.
"She found me twelve years ago."
Grace turned toward Emily.
"What?"
Emily swallowed.
"I was searching for answers."
"And you found my father?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Emily's voice became quiet.
"Because he asked me not to."
Grace stared at her sister.
"Why?"
Thomas stepped forward.
"Because the Circle was watching you."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"The Circle?"
Thomas nodded.
"They knew the youngest Blackwood heir was still alive."
Grace frowned.
"But they thought I was gone."
"No."
"They knew."
Thomas looked at her stomach.
"And now they know about your children."
Grace felt a chill.
"Why do my babies matter?"
Thomas looked toward Arthur.
The old lawyer lowered his head.
"Because of the Blackwood bloodline."
Grace's frustration exploded.
"Everyone keeps saying that!"
She wiped her tears.
"What does that even mean?"
Thomas looked at her.
"It means your grandfather discovered something."
"Something powerful people wanted hidden."
Daniel asked,
"What?"
Thomas hesitated.
"The Blackwood company wasn't only researching medicine."
Emily finished.
"They were researching genetics."
Grace looked confused.
"What kind of genetics?"
Thomas answered carefully.
"Human memory."
Silence.
Rosa stared.
"You're saying..."
"They were studying how memories are stored, transferred, and altered."
Grace touched her head.
Her forgotten childhood.
Her missing memories.
Her false identity.
"Wait..."
"You mean someone changed my memories?"
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
Her face went pale.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Eleanor's voice came from behind them.
"Me."
Everyone turned.
Eleanor stood near the broken vault entrance.
No guards.
No weapon.
Just herself.
For the first time...
She looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a woman who had carried a secret for decades.
Daniel looked shocked.
"Mother..."
Eleanor ignored him.
Grace stared.
"You did it?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"I saved you."
Grace almost laughed.
"You destroyed my life."
"No."
"I gave you a life."
"That wasn't mine!"
Eleanor's expression cracked.
"You think I wanted this?"
"Your father was hunted."
"Your mother was murdered."
"The Blackwood name became a death sentence."
Grace shook her head.
"So you stole me."
Eleanor whispered,
"I protected you."
Thomas stepped forward.
"You protected yourself."
Eleanor looked at him.
"You have no right to judge me."
"I watched my wife die because of your family."
Daniel looked between them.
"Wait."
He stared at Eleanor.
"What is she talking about?"
Eleanor said nothing.
Thomas answered.
"Your father wasn't the only person who survived."
Daniel's face changed.
"My mother?"
Thomas nodded.
"She knew the truth."
"No."
"She helped hide it."
Daniel stepped backward.
"My whole family..."
"...was involved?"
Arthur quietly said,
"Not everyone."
Everyone looked at him.
Arthur reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
"I kept this hidden for twenty-eight years."
Thomas stared.
"Arthur..."
"I'm sorry."
The old lawyer handed the envelope to Grace.
Her name was written on the front.
Not Grace Ashcroft.
Not Grace Blackwood.
Just:
For My Daughter
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a single letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her mother's.
Grace began reading.
My sweet Grace,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.
I need you to know one thing.
Your father did not abandon you.
I did not lose you.
We made a choice.
A terrible choice.
Because someone inside our family betrayed us.
Grace stopped.
Her eyes moved to the final line.
The ink was darker there.
As if her mother had written it with shaking hands.
The person who destroyed our family is not your enemy outside the walls.
It is the person standing closest to you.
Grace slowly lowered the letter.
Everyone waited.
Daniel looked around.
"Who?"
Grace's eyes moved slowly across the room.
Past Emily.
Past Thomas.
Past Eleanor.
Until they stopped...
On Daniel.
Her husband.
The man who had almost killed her.
The man who had saved her.
The man who had hidden secrets from her.
Daniel saw the accusation in her eyes.
"Grace..."
"I didn't..."
Before he could finish—
The vault doors suddenly slammed shut.
A red light began flashing.
The security system activated.
Then a robotic voice echoed through the speakers.
"Containment protocol initiated."
Everyone froze.
Arthur whispered,
"No..."
Thomas looked toward the ceiling.
"They found us."
Nathan raised his weapon.
"Who?"
Thomas answered with fear in his eyes.
"The person who owns this vault."
A pause.
Then the speaker crackled.
A woman's voice spoke.
Calm.
Elegant.
Familiar.
"Hello, everyone."
Grace's blood ran cold.
May you like
Because she recognized the voice.
It was her own.
