Chapter 19 – The Man Who Was Daniel First

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The man standing in the doorway looked exactly like Daniel.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

But something was wrong.

Something Grace couldn't explain.

The real Daniel stood beside her, frozen.

Like he was looking at his own reflection from another life.

The stranger smiled.

"Isn't this beautiful?"

He looked around the room.

"After all these years..."

"All the pieces finally came together."

Michael raised his weapon.

"You."

The stranger's smile faded.

"Hello, Michael."

Michael's grip tightened.

"You should have stayed buried."

The man laughed quietly.

"And you should have stopped pretending you were the victim."

Grace looked between them.

"You know each other."

Michael didn't answer.

The stranger did.

"We all know each other."

He stepped into the room.

"My name is Daniel Blackwood."

The real Daniel flinched.

"No."

The stranger looked at him.

"Yes."

"I was Daniel before they gave you my life."

The words hit like a bullet.

Grace looked at her husband.

His face was filled with confusion.

Anger.

Fear.

The stranger continued.

"Edward wanted the perfect heir."

"He needed someone who carried the Blackwood bloodline and could survive the transfer process."

He pointed at the real Daniel.

"So he created me."

Daniel shook his head.

"I am real."

The stranger smiled.

"Of course you are."

"That's the beautiful part."

"You are not a copy."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

"You are the original experiment."

The room went silent.

Grace frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The stranger walked closer.

"It means Edward never transferred my memories into him."

"He copied them."

Michael looked shocked.

"Impossible."

The stranger nodded.

"Exactly."

"Edward lied to everyone."

Grace looked at Daniel.

"So he's not..."

"Not a replacement."

The stranger smiled.

"He is something much more dangerous."

Daniel looked at him.

"What?"

The stranger answered:

"You are the only person who contains two complete identities."

Silence.

Daniel's face went pale.

Grace whispered:

"Daniel..."

He looked at her.

"I don't know who I am."

The stranger smiled.

"And that's why Edward chose you."

Grace turned toward the screen.

Edward was gone.

The monitors showed only static.

Michael looked around.

"He planned this."

Nathan checked the system.

"All communication is gone."

Arthur whispered:

"He wanted all five subjects together."

Grace looked at him.

"Why?"

Arthur looked terrified.

"Because the final step requires every piece."

The stranger nodded.

"Exactly."

He looked at Grace.

"Your memories."

He looked at Michael.

"Your survival."

He looked at Emily.

"Your emotional resistance."

He looked at Isabella.

"Your intelligence."

Then he looked at Daniel.

"And his consciousness."

Grace felt sick.

"We are not pieces."

The stranger smiled.

"That's what Edward always got wrong."

"He thought people were machines."

"But he forgot one thing."

"What?"

The stranger looked at Grace.

"Machines don't love."

Everyone became silent.

Because that sentence sounded like a confession.

Not a threat.

A regret.

Grace noticed.

"You're not here to help Edward."

The stranger's expression changed.

For the first time...

Pain appeared.

"No."

"I'm here to stop him."

Michael looked surprised.

"Why?"

The stranger looked at him.

"Because I know what it's like to lose yourself."

He touched his own head.

"I spent years hearing memories that weren't mine."

"Feeling emotions that weren't mine."

"Living a life I never chose."

He looked at Daniel.

"And then I watched him live it."

Daniel stared.

"You hate me."

The stranger shook his head.

"No."

"I envy you."

That answer shocked everyone.

Grace stepped forward.

"Then why did you say you were my husband?"

The stranger looked at her.

"Because before they separated us..."

He stopped.

A painful silence.

"We were supposed to be together."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

The stranger looked at Grace.

"You don't remember."

Grace felt a chill.

"Remember what?"

The stranger answered:

"Before the memory wipe..."

"You chose me."

The room froze.

Daniel stared.

"No."

The stranger continued.

"You loved the original Daniel."

"Not the version they created later."

Grace's heart raced.

"No..."

She looked at her husband.

Then at the stranger.

"I would remember."

The stranger shook his head.

"They made sure you wouldn't."

Suddenly, the lights changed.

A hidden recording activated.

Elena's voice filled the room.

"If this message is playing..."

Everyone froze.

"Then Edward failed."

Grace closed her eyes.

Her mother's voice.

Again.

But this time...

Different.

Afraid.

"I need you to understand."

"The person you loved before the memory removal..."

A pause.

"Was Daniel Blackwood."

Grace looked at the stranger.

The recording continued.

"Edward separated you because your emotional bond was too strong."

"It interfered with the transfer."

Daniel whispered:

"No..."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Grace felt like she was falling apart.

Because suddenly...

She had memories she didn't have.

A young man.

A promise.

A life before everything was stolen.

The stranger stepped closer.

"Grace."

She looked at him.

He whispered:

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For not saving you sooner."

A tear fell from his eye.

Then the entire facility went silent.

Every screen turned on.

Edward appeared.

But this time...

He wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was a woman.

Grace recognized her immediately.

The woman from the old video.

The woman who looked like her.

Older.

Cold.

Different.

The label appeared:

GRACE BLACKWOOD – ORIGINAL MEMORY MODEL

Grace stopped breathing.

Edward smiled.

"Now you understand."

The woman beside him looked directly at Grace.

And spoke.

With Grace's voice.

"You are not the first Grace."

A pause.

"You are the second."

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.
