Chapter 15 – The Brother in the Shadows

Darkness swallowed the vault.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound was the low hum of emergency power struggling to keep the system alive.
Then the screen flickered back on.
One sentence remained.
MICHAEL BLACKWOOD IS ALIVE.
Grace stared at those words until her eyes burned.
Her brother.
An older brother.
Someone who had existed before all of them.
Someone whose existence had been erased.
She looked at Thomas.
"Tell me he's lying."
Her father didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Grace felt her heart break.
"You knew."
Thomas slowly shook his head.
"Not everything."
"But you knew there was another child."
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"And you let me believe I was alone?"
"I was trying to protect you."
Grace laughed painfully.
"Everyone keeps using that excuse."
Her voice became louder.
"Everyone."
"You protected me by lying."
"You protected me by stealing my memories."
"You protected me by letting me hate people who weren't even the real enemy."
Thomas looked destroyed.
"I was wrong."
"Yes."
"You were."
Nobody spoke.
The truth was finally out.
And somehow...
It felt worse than the lies.
Daniel stood apart from everyone.
His eyes were fixed on the floor.
Grace noticed.
"Daniel."
He didn't respond.
She stepped closer.
"Look at me."
Slowly, he did.
And for the first time since she met him...
Grace saw fear.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
His voice cracked.
"I spent my whole life believing I was Daniel Ashcroft."
"You are."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You heard her."
"Ashcroft was a name they gave me."
Grace reached toward him.
But he stepped back.
"I don't even know if my memories belong to me."
Emily watched quietly.
Then she spoke.
"Now you understand."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
"That's what they did to us."
Grace looked at Emily.
"You knew?"
"I knew something was wrong."
Emily touched her temple.
"My childhood memories are incomplete."
"I remember places."
"Faces."
"Sounds."
"But never the important moments."
Isabella's voice suddenly came through the speaker.
"Because those memories were removed."
Everyone looked upward.
Grace clenched her fists.
"Isabella."
"Yes."
"Where are you?"
A soft laugh.
"Closer than you think."
The cameras in the vault activated.
One by one.
Showing different areas of the estate.
The burning mansion.
The empty halls.
The destroyed ballroom.
Then...
The cemetery.
Grace froze.
On the screen was Eleanor.
Standing beside a grave.
Nathan moved closer.
"Can we trace the signal?"
His agent checked the equipment.
"No."
"She's using internal systems."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"The cemetery."
Grace turned.
"What?"
"That's where she went."
Thomas's expression changed.
"No."
"What?"
Thomas looked terrified.
"Not the cemetery."
"Anything but there."
Grace noticed.
"What is buried there?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Eleanor's voice suddenly came through another speaker.
This time...
Not Isabella.
Eleanor.
"You all deserve to know."
Everyone looked toward the screen.
Eleanor stood in front of an old stone monument.
Behind her were dozens of graves belonging to the Ashcroft family.
But she wasn't standing beside one grave.
She was standing beside a hidden underground entrance.
Nathan frowned.
"There's a facility under the cemetery?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"The original Blackwood laboratory."
Grace stared.
"I thought it was destroyed."
"It was hidden."
Eleanor looked directly into the camera.
"Thomas always believed he could bury the past."
"But the past remembers."
She pressed a button.
The ground behind her opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Grace whispered:
"What is that place?"
Thomas answered quietly:
"Where it all started."
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
A younger Elena Blackwood appeared.
She looked different.
Not like the loving mother from Grace's memories.
She looked determined.
Cold.
Standing inside the laboratory.
A doctor spoke beside her.
"The children are responding well."
Elena looked at several glass rooms.
Inside were children.
Grace covered her mouth.
"No..."
The video showed five small children.
Grace.
Emily.
Isabella.
Daniel.
And another boy.
Michael.
Elena looked at the camera.
"The future belongs to those who can control memory."
Grace felt sick.
Her own mother.
The woman she had spent her whole life missing.
Had created the nightmare.
The video continued.
A scientist asked:
"What about the emotional consequences?"
Elena answered:
"They are necessary."
"Children forget."
"Children adapt."
Grace couldn't watch anymore.
She turned away.
Daniel whispered:
"We were experiments."
A voice behind them answered:
"Not exactly."
Everyone spun around.
A man stood at the entrance of the vault.
Older.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A scar across his face.
Grace immediately recognized him from the security footage.
The masked man.
Except now...
He wasn't wearing the mask.
He looked directly at her.
"I'm Michael."
Nobody moved.
Grace's breath stopped.
Her brother.
The man who had hunted them.
The man who had destroyed their lives.
Michael Blackwood looked at her with sadness.
"I never wanted you to find out this way."
Daniel raised his weapon.
"You attacked us."
Michael looked at him.
"I saved you."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You killed people."
"Yes."
Silence.
Michael didn't deny it.
"I did terrible things."
"Because I learned from the people who created me."
Grace stared at him.
"Why?"
Michael looked at her.
"Because I wanted the truth."
"You could have told us."
"No."
His eyes moved toward the screen showing Elena's laboratory.
"Because nobody believes a monster."
Grace felt a chill.
"Why call yourself that?"
Michael looked at her.
"Because that's what they made me."
A long silence.
Then Michael stepped closer.
"Grace..."
"I need you to understand something."
"Your mother didn't create Project Orion to control the world."
Grace frowned.
"Then why?"
Michael looked toward Daniel.
"She created it to stop something worse."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"What?"
Michael answered:
"The Circle wasn't hunting the Blackwoods."
"They were running from them."
Everyone froze.
Nathan stepped forward.
"Explain."
Michael looked at the five names on the screen.
"The Blackwoods weren't the victims."
"They were the beginning."
Grace whispered:
"The beginning of what?"
Michael looked directly at her.
"A war."
Before anyone could ask another question—
The entire mansion shook violently.
A massive explosion erupted above them.
The cameras went black.
Nathan checked his radio.
Static.
Then one final transmission came through.
A voice.
Not Isabella.
Not Michael.
A stranger.
"Project Orion has been activated."
Everyone froze.
Michael's face changed.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
"No..."
Grace looked at him.
"What?"
Michael whispered:
"The fifth subject."
A pause.
May you like
Then:
"He's awake."
