Chapter 18 – The Memory That Was Never Hers

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But for Grace...

It felt like years.

The moment the screen displayed:

MEMORY RESTORATION BEGINNING

Something inside her mind broke open.

Not a thought.

Not a dream.

A memory.

A memory that did not belong to her.

She saw a room.

A white room.

Cold.

Sterile.

Filled with machines.

She saw her own hands.

But they were smaller.

A child's hands.

A little girl sitting on a hospital bed.

Doctors standing around her.

And someone speaking.

A voice she recognized immediately.

Edward Blackwood.

"Subject One is responding."

Grace watched from inside the memory.

Unable to move.

Unable to scream.

Unable to wake up.

A doctor asked:

"Will she remember?"

Edward answered:

"No."

"Not yet."

The child on the bed looked up.

And Grace felt her heart stop.

Because the child was her.

But not the Grace she knew.

This Grace was different.

Silent.

Empty.

Like someone had taken away everything that made her human.

Edward placed a hand on the child's head.

"Memory is only information."

"Identity is control."

Then another voice spoke.

A woman's voice.

Her mother's.

"No."

Elena Blackwood appeared.

Younger.

Angrier.

Terrified.

"She's my daughter."

Edward turned.

"She is our greatest achievement."

Elena stepped between them.

"She's a child."

Edward smiled.

"She's the future."

The memory shattered.

Grace gasped.

She returned to reality.

She was lying on the floor.

Daniel was beside her.

"Grace!"

She looked up.

His face was full of fear.

But something was different.

She could see it.

He wasn't only Daniel anymore.

There was another presence behind his eyes.

An older one.

A memory.

A lifetime.

Grace pushed herself away.

"Don't touch me."

Daniel froze.

The pain on his face was immediate.

But she couldn't stop.

Because she didn't know what was real anymore.

"How many memories are mine?"

Nobody answered.

Michael stood silently.

Because he knew.

Thomas looked broken.

Elena was crying.

Grace looked at her mother.

"You knew."

Elena shook her head.

"Not everything."

"You knew they changed me."

"I knew they were trying to."

"And you let them."

Elena's tears fell.

"I tried to stop him."

"But you failed."

The words destroyed her.

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"I failed."

For once...

Nobody defended themselves.

Nobody said they were protecting Grace.

Nobody offered excuses.

They just admitted the truth.

The truth was uglier than any lie.

Suddenly, the facility alarm changed.

Not a warning.

A countdown.

Nathan looked at the screen.

"Something new is happening."

Arthur moved closer.

"What?"

Nathan read the message.

ORION PHASE TWO ACTIVATED

Michael's face changed.

"No."

Grace looked at him.

"What?"

Michael stared at the screen.

"Phase Two was never supposed to happen."

Daniel stepped forward.

"What is Phase Two?"

Michael answered quietly:

"The transfer."

Everyone froze.

Grace felt cold.

"Transfer of what?"

Michael looked at her.

"Everything."

The screens around them activated.

Thousands of files appeared.

Names.

Dates.

Memories.

People.

Nathan stared.

"These are..."

"Copies."

Michael's voice was heavy.

"Edward didn't just want to live forever."

"He wanted to remove death completely."

Grace looked at the files.

"And the people?"

Michael answered:

"Empty bodies."

"Waiting for memories."

A terrible silence followed.

Then a voice echoed through the facility.

Edward.

"You should be proud, Grace."

Everyone looked toward the speakers.

"You are witnessing the end of human suffering."

Grace looked upward.

"No."

Edward continued.

"You lost your mother."

"You lost your childhood."

"You lost your family."

"I can fix all of that."

Grace shouted:

"You can't bring people back!"

Edward replied calmly:

"I already did."

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

A woman walking through a laboratory.

Grace stopped breathing.

Because the woman looked exactly like her.

But older.

Much older.

The video label appeared:

ELENA BLACKWOOD – MEMORY RESTORATION SUBJECT

Grace stared.

"Mom?"

Elena looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

"No..."

The video showed the woman speaking.

"Where am I?"

A scientist answered:

"Welcome back, Elena."

The woman touched her face.

"Who am I?"

Grace felt sick.

Because the woman on the screen was not acting.

She was confused.

Lost.

Like a newborn.

Edward's voice returned.

"The body survives."

"The memories return."

"The person returns."

Daniel whispered:

"No."

Grace looked at him.

"You know something."

Daniel looked devastated.

"I remember."

"What?"

He looked at Edward's image.

"The first transfer."

A pause.

"Someone always comes back."

"But never completely."

Grace understood.

The person who returned...

Was a copy.

Not the original.

Edward wasn't defeating death.

He was creating replacements.

Michael looked at Grace.

"That's why I tried to destroy Project Orion."

She stared at him.

"You knew?"

"I was part of it."

"Your father..."

Michael corrected:

"Edward."

"He didn't create children."

"He created containers."

Grace felt tears fall.

"Then why me?"

Michael looked away.

"Because you were the only one who rejected him."

"What?"

"Every other subject accepted the memories."

"But you fought."

"Your mind resisted."

Grace remembered the childhood memory.

The empty child.

The experiments.

The voices.

"I was supposed to become him."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"But your mother saved you."

Elena whispered:

"I erased the memories myself."

Everyone looked at her.

Grace stared.

"You?"

Elena nodded.

"I destroyed your childhood memories."

"But not because I wanted to control you."

"Because I wanted you to have a chance."

Grace didn't know what to feel.

Anger.

Pain.

Love.

Betrayal.

All mixed together.

Then the facility shook violently.

Nathan checked the cameras.

"Someone breached the outer perimeter."

Michael looked toward the entrance.

"No."

"What?"

Michael's face turned pale.

"He found us."

Grace looked at him.

"Who?"

Michael didn't answer.

Because the answer came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone walking toward them.

Then a man's voice echoed through the facility.

"Father."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward the door.

The voice continued:

"You should have stayed dead."

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Same age as Daniel.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Grace stopped breathing.

Because she was looking at another Daniel.

The original.

The first subject.

The man Daniel was created from.

He looked at Grace.

Then smiled.

"Hello."

"I've been waiting twenty-eight years to meet my wife."

Grace felt the world collapse.

May you like

Because he wasn't looking at her like a stranger.

He was looking at her like she belonged to him.
