Chapter 6 – The Man Behind the Mask

The slow clap echoed through the underground vault.
One...
Two...
Three...
Every sound bounced off the concrete walls.
The masked man stood beneath a flickering fluorescent light, his polished black shoes surrounded by scattered files and shattered glass. His tailored suit looked untouched by the fire raging above them.
In his left hand, he held the missing DNA file.
In his right...
A small black detonator.
Grace instinctively stepped in front of her stomach.
Daniel immediately raised his pistol.
"Don't move."
The masked man chuckled.
"You always were impatient, Daniel."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
Instead of answering, the man looked directly at Grace.
"So..."
"The little girl finally grew up."
Grace's heartbeat quickened.
"You know me?"
"I knew you before you knew your own name."
Emily quietly pulled her pistol from beneath her coat.
"We don't have time for games."
The masked man noticed.
"Still reckless, Emily."
"Take off the mask."
"No."
"You've hidden long enough."
The man sighed.
"I suppose introductions can wait."
His thumb lightly rested on the detonator.
Daniel's finger tightened on the trigger.
"Drop it."
"I wouldn't."
"Why not?"
"Because this entire basement is wired with explosives."
Silence.
Arthur's face drained of color.
"No..."
The masked man smiled.
"Oh, yes."
He glanced toward the concrete ceiling.
"I've spent months preparing tonight."
Grace looked around.
"You expect us to believe that?"
"You don't have to believe me."
He pressed a small button on the detonator.
A sharp electronic beep echoed through the vault.
Red warning lights immediately flashed along the walls.
Arthur whispered,
"He isn't lying..."
Daniel slowly lowered his pistol.
"How much explosive?"
"Enough to bring the mansion into the ocean."
Rosa stared in horror.
"There are still people upstairs."
The masked man shrugged.
"Collateral damage."
Grace couldn't believe how calmly he said it.
"You're insane."
"No."
"I'm patient."
He lifted the DNA file slightly.
"I've waited twenty-eight years for this moment."
Daniel took one careful step forward.
"What do you want?"
"You know exactly what I want."
"The trust."
The masked man smiled.
"Very good."
Grace frowned.
"If this is about money..."
"It stopped being about money decades ago."
"Then what?"
The man's eyes darkened behind the mask.
"Revenge."
Silence filled the room.
Emily folded her arms.
"You still blame children."
"I blame bloodlines."
Grace looked confused.
"What bloodline?"
Instead of answering, the masked man opened the DNA file.
He removed a single document.
Even from several feet away, Grace could see the words stamped across the top.
CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY REPORT
Her heart pounded.
"My father..."
The masked man nodded.
"Yes."
"You've spent your entire life mourning the wrong man."
Grace took a step forward.
"Tell me."
"No."
"Please."
"I'd rather show you."
He held the paper high enough for everyone to see.
Daniel frowned.
"What does it say?"
The masked man laughed.
"If I tell you now..."
"...the game ends too quickly."
Emily's patience snapped.
She fired.
BANG!
The bullet struck the man's shoulder.
Instead of falling—
He smiled.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Body armor."
The masked man looked almost amused.
"You've gotten slower, Emily."
He pressed another button on the detonator.
A loud explosion shook the far end of the vault.
Concrete dust filled the air.
One of the exits collapsed instantly beneath tons of debris.
Rosa screamed.
"We're trapped!"
"Not yet," Daniel said.
"There should be another exit."
Arthur shook his head.
"There was."
Everyone looked at him.
"The blast just buried it."
Grace's breathing became shallow.
Smoke drifted through the damaged ceiling.
The fire above was spreading downward.
The masked man calmly stepped backward toward a steel elevator hidden in the rear wall.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"I didn't know there was an elevator."
"You weren't supposed to."
The elevator doors slid open.
Inside stood four heavily armed men dressed in black tactical gear.
Each carried assault rifles fitted with suppressors.
One of them spoke into an earpiece.
"Package secured."
The masked man nodded.
"Excellent."
Daniel aimed his pistol again.
"If you leave with that file..."
"You'll never know the truth."
Grace shouted,
"What truth?"
The masked man looked directly into her eyes.
"The man you call your father..."
"...is still alive."
Everything stopped.
Grace blinked.
"No."
"He died before I was born."
"So your family told you."
"My mother told me."
"Did she?"
Grace's voice trembled.
"You're lying."
The masked man slowly shook his head.
"The biggest lie wasn't your name."
"It wasn't your birthday."
"It wasn't even the kidnapping."
He smiled beneath the mask.
"The biggest lie..."
"...was the funeral."
Grace's knees nearly gave out.
Daniel caught her before she collapsed.
"This isn't true," Daniel said firmly.
"He's manipulating you."
The masked man chuckled.
"Then explain something."
He looked at Daniel.
"Have you ever seen a death certificate?"
Daniel hesitated.
"No."
"A burial record?"
"No."
"A body?"
Daniel remained silent.
The masked man turned back to Grace.
"Neither have you."
Grace searched her memories desperately.
Family photos.
Old birthday cards.
The tiny apartment where she'd grown up.
Her adoptive parents.
Her mother's tears whenever she asked about her father.
But...
She had never seen a grave.
Never attended a memorial.
Never seen a photograph of his funeral.
Her breathing became uneven.
"Oh my God..."
Emily quietly whispered,
"I tried to tell you."
Grace looked at her.
"You knew?"
Emily nodded sadly.
"I've known for years."
"You knew my father was alive?"
"I knew someone wanted us to believe he wasn't."
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"Where is he?"
The masked man smiled.
"Now that's the right question."
He stepped backward into the elevator.
Daniel shouted,
"Stop him!"
Before anyone could move—
Automatic gunfire erupted.
The four mercenaries opened fire, forcing everyone behind overturned filing cabinets.
Bullets ripped through shelves, shredding decades of documents.
Daniel fired back twice.
Emily covered Grace and Rosa.
Arthur crawled toward a concrete pillar.
The elevator doors began closing.
Grace saw the masked man one last time.
He raised the DNA file.
Then he said quietly,
"Find your father..."
"...before they do."
The doors closed.
The elevator began to rise.
Daniel sprinted toward it and fired repeatedly.
Too late.
The elevator disappeared into the darkness above.
Silence returned.
Only the distant sound of alarms echoed through the vault.
Grace slowly stood.
She looked at the scattered papers covering the floor.
Her entire life had been built on lies.
Her identity.
Her family.
Her inheritance.
Now...
Even her father's death had become another mystery.
Suddenly, a faint voice crackled through a damaged security speaker mounted on the wall.
Static filled the room.
Then a man spoke.
Calm.
Professional.
"This is Special Agent Nathan Cole with the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Everyone froze.
"If Grace Blackwood is still alive..."
"Do not leave the estate."
"We are coming for you."
Arthur's face turned pale.
May you like
Daniel whispered one sentence that made Grace's blood run cold.
"They found us before the FBI did."
