Chapter 17 – The Final Vessel

The words echoed through the underground facility.

"You are the final vessel."

Grace felt like she could no longer breathe.

The entire world seemed to slow down.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her sisters.

Daniel.

The Circle.

Project Orion.

Everything had been connected to one terrifying truth.

Her entire life...

Had been planned.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Then louder:

"No."

She looked at the screen.

"You don't get to decide what I am."

Edward Blackwood smiled.

Not with anger.

Not with cruelty.

With the calm confidence of someone who believed he had already won.

"That defiance."

He tilted his head.

"Exactly what makes you perfect."

Grace stepped back.

"Perfect for what?"

Edward looked at Daniel.

"For completion."

Everyone turned toward Daniel.

He was still standing near the wall, struggling to understand what was happening inside his own mind.

Michael looked at Edward with hatred.

"You failed."

Edward's expression remained calm.

"Did I?"

Michael stepped forward.

"You spent decades trying to create a perfect vessel."

"And you created monsters."

Edward smiled.

"Children always misunderstand their parents."

Michael's face hardened.

"You are not my father."

"No."

Edward looked at him.

"You are my first mistake."

The words cut deeper than anyone expected.

Michael's eyes filled with anger.

Grace noticed something.

For all his power.

For all his violence.

Michael was still a son who wanted his father's approval.

Edward continued:

"The first experiment."

"Subject Zero."

"The first transfer."

"The first failure."

Michael clenched his fists.

"I survived."

"Yes."

Edward smiled.

"And that was the problem."

The screen changed.

Images appeared.

Michael as a child.

Daniel as a child.

Grace and her sisters.

All connected by the same project.

Nathan stared.

"This is beyond anything we've ever investigated."

Arthur whispered:

"We were never investigating a conspiracy."

"We were investigating a resurrection."

A loud alarm suddenly interrupted them.

The facility shook again.

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

"They're coming."

Daniel slowly lifted his head.

"Who?"

Michael answered:

"The Circle."

Grace frowned.

"I thought they were part of this."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"They were created to destroy Edward's work."

Nathan looked confused.

"Then why attack the Blackwoods?"

Michael's expression darkened.

"Because Edward made sure everyone believed the wrong enemy existed."

Grace looked at the screen.

Edward.

The man behind everything.

"You started the Circle."

Edward didn't deny it.

"I created both sides."

Silence.

"The Circle."

"The Blackwood empire."

"Project Orion."

"All of it."

Thomas looked horrified.

"You manipulated everyone."

Edward smiled.

"That's what intelligence is."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"That's what madness is."

For the first time...

Edward looked annoyed.

Just slightly.

"You always lacked vision, Thomas."

Thomas stepped closer.

"You destroyed your own family."

Edward replied:

"I preserved it."

Grace felt sick.

"Preserved?"

Edward looked at her.

"Death is the greatest flaw of humanity."

"You lost your mother."

"You lost your childhood."

"You lost everyone you loved."

His voice softened.

"I can give them back."

Grace froze.

"What?"

Edward pressed a button.

A new screen appeared.

Hundreds of files.

Thousands of names.

People who were supposedly dead.

Nathan stepped closer.

"What are those?"

Edward smiled.

"Memories."

Grace's heart raced.

"No..."

Michael stared at the screen.

"He succeeded."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

Michael whispered:

"He can restore them."

Everyone went silent.

Edward continued:

"Your mother."

"Your grandfather."

"Everyone you lost."

"They are not gone."

"They are waiting."

Grace shook her head.

"This is wrong."

Edward frowned.

"Why?"

"Because they aren't them anymore."

Edward smiled.

"You still think identity comes from the body."

He looked at Daniel.

"Your husband proves otherwise."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Don't call me that."

Edward smiled.

"But you are the proof."

Daniel's expression changed.

"What did you do to me?"

Edward answered:

"I gave you another chance."

Daniel touched his head.

The memories were coming faster now.

A child.

A laboratory.

A man.

A voice.

His own voice.

But older.

Different.

"I remember..."

Grace looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel looked terrified.

"I remember meeting Edward."

Everyone froze.

Thomas whispered:

"No..."

Daniel continued:

"I wasn't the first."

"What do you mean?"

Daniel looked toward the screen.

"There was another Daniel."

A silence.

Edward smiled.

"Excellent."

"The memories are returning."

Grace felt a chill.

"Another Daniel?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"An original."

Michael looked at him.

"The first successful transfer."

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"I wasn't born."

"I was created."

Grace stepped toward him.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"Grace..."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know if anything about me is real."

She reached for his hand.

"You are real."

"But what if I'm not?"

"You are the man who saved me."

"You are the man who loved me."

"You are Daniel."

For a moment...

The fear in his eyes softened.

Then Edward interrupted.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked at the screen.

"A perfect emotional attachment."

Grace stared.

"What?"

Edward smiled.

"The bond between you and Daniel is exactly why you were selected."

Her blood ran cold.

"What are you talking about?"

Edward answered:

"Because the final transfer requires one thing."

"What?"

"Love."

Nobody spoke.

Edward continued:

"The mind rejects a foreign memory without emotional connection."

Grace felt sick.

"You planned our marriage?"

Edward smiled.

"Not just the marriage."

"The entire relationship."

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

Edward continued.

"Every choice."

"Every meeting."

"Every moment that brought you together."

"Designed."

Grace felt tears falling.

Her entire life.

Her love.

Her happiness.

Was it all fake?

Daniel looked at her.

"Grace..."

But she couldn't hear him.

Because the screen changed again.

A final file appeared.

PROJECT ORION FINAL PHASE

HOST: GRACE BLACKWOOD

MEMORY SOURCE: SUBJECT ZERO

EMOTIONAL ANCHOR: DANIEL ASHCROFT

Nathan looked at the file.

"Memory source..."

He stopped.

Then whispered:

"No."

Grace turned.

"What?"

Nathan looked horrified.

"Edward isn't trying to transfer himself into you."

Everyone stared.

"Then who?"

Nathan pointed at the screen.

"The memory source."

He swallowed.

"Is already inside you."

Grace froze.

Edward smiled.

"Now you understand."

Michael whispered:

"No..."

Edward looked directly at Grace.

"You were never the final vessel."

A pause.

"You were the first."

The entire facility went dark.

Then one final message appeared.

MEMORY RESTORATION BEGINNING

Grace suddenly screamed.

Not from pain.

From recognition.

Because inside her mind...

A memory appeared.

A memory that was impossible.

A memory from before she was born.

A man's voice.

Her voice.

May you like

And one sentence:

"Welcome back, Edward."
