Chapter 11 – The Name Hidden in the Blood Report

The countdown continued.
09:14
09:13
09:12
The numbers flashed red across the vault wall.
Every second felt like a heartbeat.
Grace stared at Daniel.
Her husband.
The man who had lied to her.
The man who had saved her.
The man who had just claimed he knew who murdered her mother.
"Say it."
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel looked at her.
"Grace..."
"No more secrets."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Not tonight."
"Not after everything."
She pointed toward the countdown.
"We have less than ten minutes."
"Tell me who killed my mother."
Silence.
Thomas looked at Daniel carefully.
"You know something."
Daniel didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Emily stepped closer.
"You knew before tonight."
Daniel looked away.
"Yes."
Grace felt like the floor disappeared beneath her.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You knew."
Daniel's silence confirmed it.
Rosa looked at him with disbelief.
"How could you hide something like that?"
Daniel's expression broke.
"Because every person who discovered the truth ended up dead."
Grace stared.
"And you thought lying to me was better?"
"I thought keeping you alive was better."
The countdown continued.
08:30
Nathan stepped between them.
"We can argue later."
He pointed toward the timer.
"Right now, we need to survive."
Thomas looked toward the hidden compartment.
"The archive."
Everyone turned.
The black box inside the glass container remained untouched.
Daniel walked toward it.
"The answers are inside."
Arthur shook his head.
"No."
"Not all answers."
He looked at Grace.
"Some answers destroy the person who finds them."
Grace didn't hesitate.
"Open it."
Arthur looked worried.
"Grace..."
"I spent my whole life living inside a lie."
She stepped forward.
"I want the truth."
Daniel studied her face.
Then he nodded.
Nathan carefully examined the container.
"No explosives."
"No sensors."
"Someone wanted us to open this."
Emily smiled bitterly.
"Of course."
"Isabella never gives anything without a price."
Nathan disabled the lock.
The glass cover opened.
Inside was a small black box.
Old.
Simple.
Nothing like the technology surrounding it.
Grace picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
There was a name engraved on the top.
THOMAS & ELENA BLACKWOOD
Her parents.
Thomas looked away.
Grace noticed.
"You knew about this."
Thomas swallowed.
"Yes."
"What is it?"
"A recording."
"Of what?"
Thomas looked at her.
"The night your mother died."
The room became silent.
Grace pressed the button.
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then a woman's voice filled the vault.
Elena Blackwood.
Grace's mother.
Everyone froze.
"My dear Grace..."
Grace immediately covered her mouth.
Hearing her mother's voice after twenty-eight years felt impossible.
"If you are hearing this..."
Elena's voice shook.
"...then something happened to us."
A pause.
"I need you to understand something."
"The person who betrayed us..."
"...was someone we loved."
Grace looked around the room.
The recording continued.
"We trusted them."
"We gave them everything."
"But they wanted more."
A man's voice suddenly appeared.
Thomas.
"You don't have to do this."
Elena cried.
"If we don't, they will take our daughters."
Grace's breathing stopped.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
Young.
Familiar.
Everyone slowly looked toward Eleanor.
The recording continued.
"I can protect them."
Grace froze.
That was Eleanor's voice.
Twenty-eight years younger.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"No..."
The recording played.
Young Eleanor said:
"Give me Grace."
Thomas shouted:
"Absolutely not."
"You don't understand."
"They know about the inheritance."
"They know about the youngest heir."
"If they find all three girls together, they will kill them."
Elena whispered:
"What are you suggesting?"
A long silence.
Then Eleanor said:
"I will take Grace."
Grace dropped the recorder slightly.
The room became painfully quiet.
Eleanor looked at her.
"I was trying to save you."
The recording continued.
Thomas's voice became furious.
"You cannot separate them."
"I have no choice."
"You will destroy her life."
"I will give her a life."
The recording suddenly changed.
A loud crash.
Someone screaming.
Then Elena's voice.
Terrified.
"No!"
A gunshot.
Grace covered her ears.
"No..."
Another gunshot.
Then silence.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Finally...
Daniel whispered,
"That's not the whole recording."
Everyone looked at him.
Grace turned slowly.
"What?"
Daniel looked toward the black box.
"There should be another file."
Thomas frowned.
"How would you know?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Emily stepped closer.
"You've heard it."
Daniel remained silent.
Grace felt her chest tighten.
"Daniel..."
He looked at her.
"I found the recording three years ago."
Her eyes filled with betrayal.
"Three years?"
"I was investigating my father."
"And you never told me?"
"I didn't know how."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You didn't want to."
Daniel looked devastated.
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
He looked at the countdown.
04:59
Then back at Grace.
"Of finding out the truth about me."
A loud alarm interrupted them.
The vault doors began closing tighter.
Nathan looked at the system.
"We're losing oxygen."
"What?"
"The self-destruct isn't the only system."
Isabella's voice came through the speakers.
"Time is almost over."
Grace looked upward.
"Isabella!"
The speaker crackled.
"Yes, little sister?"
"Why are you doing this?"
A pause.
Then Isabella answered:
"Because I spent my entire life waiting for someone to choose me."
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"And nobody did."
The countdown reached:
03:30
Daniel suddenly walked toward the speaker.
"Isabella."
Everyone looked at him.
His voice softened.
"I know what happened."
Silence.
Then Isabella answered.
"No, you don't."
"Your father told me."
A pause.
The entire room froze.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"What?"
Daniel stared at the floor.
"My father didn't just hide Grace's identity."
"He knew about Isabella."
Grace whispered,
"Daniel..."
He continued.
"He knew she was alive."
Emily's face changed.
"Then why did he abandon her?"
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
"Because your father wasn't the one who made that choice."
Everyone turned.
Thomas looked confused.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel took a breath.
"The night Elena died..."
"I found the missing report."
"The original one."
"The one showing who ordered the attack."
Grace's heart pounded.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
Then at Arthur.
Then finally at Thomas.
His voice became almost a whisper.
"The person who ordered the murders..."
"...was Elena Blackwood herself."
Nobody moved.
Thomas's face went completely white.
"That's impossible."
Grace stared at Daniel.
"You expect me to believe my mother killed her own family?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the hidden speaker.
"I think someone changed the evidence."
The vault lights flickered.
Isabella's voice returned.
And this time...
She sounded afraid.
"Daniel..."
Everyone froze.
Because for the first time...
Isabella wasn't angry.
She was scared.
"Where did you find that report?"
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
"In your father's private archive."
A long silence.
Then Isabella whispered:
"That archive doesn't exist."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Exactly."
The countdown stopped.
00:00
Everyone held their breath.
Nothing happened.
No explosion.
No collapse.
No fire.
Then the vault screen changed.
A new message appeared.
AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED
Underneath:
ENTER TRUE BLACKWOOD HEIR
Grace stared at the screen.
Then the system displayed a question.
WHO IS THE REAL HEIR?
Three names appeared.
GRACE.
EMILY.
ISABELLA.
Everyone looked at one another.
Then a fourth name appeared.
A name nobody expected.
May you like
DANIEL ASHCROFT
The entire vault went silent.
