Chapter 2 - THE NAME THAT WAS ERASED

Lucas grabbed the card from the security officer.

He stared at the faded lettering.

DONOVAN-STERLING FOUNDERS ACCESS.

He laughed.

“This company has never been called Donovan-Sterling.”

Michael looked at him.

“That’s what your father wanted you to believe.”

Richard’s voice hardened.

“Michael, take Willow home.”

“We can discuss this privately tomorrow.”

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Final.

Michael walked toward Willow.

He removed his work jacket and placed it gently around her shoulders.

“You ready to leave?”

Willow nodded.

But Lucas stepped in front of them.

“She’s my wife.”

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“For tonight.”

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Lucas.”

Something in his tone made Lucas turn.

Richard was staring toward the hotel entrance.

Three people had just stepped from the elevator.

One was Sterling Holdings’ general counsel, Martin Keene.

The second was a woman Willow recognized from financial magazines.

Eleanor Shaw.

Chairwoman of North Coast Fiduciary Bank.

The third man carried two large document cases.

Lucas frowned.

“Why are they here?”

Eleanor walked directly toward Michael.

“Mr. Donovan.”

She shook his hand.

“Your authorization was received fourteen minutes ago.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Willow looked between them.

“What authorization?”

Michael hesitated.

He seemed almost ashamed.

Then he faced his daughter.

“The one I should have told you about years ago.”

Richard interrupted.

“Do not do this here.”

Michael ignored him.

“Your grandfather wasn’t just a mechanic.”

Willow blinked.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“I know.”

“He owned Donovan Freight Systems.”

Willow stared at him.

Michael continued.

“In 1979, he partnered with Charles Sterling.”

“They built a transportation company together.”

“Your grandfather owned fifty percent.”

Lucas shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael looked at him.

“Your grandfather Charles was good at publicity.”

“Patrick Donovan was good at building companies.”

“When Patrick died unexpectedly, Charles convinced the public that the business had always belonged to the Sterlings.”

Richard stepped forward.

“My father bought him out.”

Michael’s eyes became cold.

“No.”

“He tried.”

Eleanor opened one of the document cases.

Inside were original certificates protected beneath clear archival covers.

Thirty-eight percent of Sterling Holdings’ voting shares.

Registered to the Donovan Family Trust.

Willow felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Lucas stared at the certificates.

Then at Michael.

“Those are fake.”

Martin Keene spoke for the first time.

“They are authentic.”

Lucas turned sharply.

“You work for us.”

Martin’s expression was uncomfortable.

“I work for the corporation.”

Richard whispered something under his breath.

Michael looked at Willow.

“I kept the trust dormant because I wanted you to grow up knowing who you were without money deciding it for you.”

Willow could barely speak.

“Who owns those shares?”

Michael answered quietly.

“You do.”

Six hundred people had watched Lucas Sterling slap a woman he believed depended on his family fortune.

Now those same people watched him discover that his wife was the largest individual beneficial owner of his family company.

And that was only the first secret.
