Chapter 16 - THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT THEY NEVER SHOWED HER
Willow stared at the document until the letters blurred.
Lucas had been appointed co-trustee three days before their wedding.
Her signature appeared beneath his.
She had never seen the paper.
Michael’s expression became dangerous.
“This is forged.”
Eleanor nodded.
“We believe so.”
The purpose soon became clear.
If Willow died while married without children, Lucas would gain temporary administrative control over her beneficial shares.
Willow felt cold.
Amanda read the clause twice.
“He didn’t marry you because of this, did he?”
Nobody answered.
Willow wanted the answer directly from Lucas.
Federal investigators allowed a supervised meeting.
He entered wearing the same suit from the previous day.
No watch.
No arrogance.
Willow placed the trust agreement between them.
“Did you know?”
Lucas stared at it.
His silence lasted too long.
“Lucas.”
“My father showed me after we got engaged.”
Willow’s heart seemed to stop.
“So you knew I had shares.”
“Not how many.”
“You knew my father controlled part of Sterling Holdings.”
“Yes.”
“Did you marry me for them?”
Lucas looked up.
“At first?”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than the slap.
Willow swallowed.
“And later?”
“I loved you.”
“No.”
“You loved controlling me.”
Lucas’s eyes filled with tears.
“I did love you.”
“Then why forge my signature?”
He looked down.
“My father said it was protection.”
“For who?”
Lucas had no answer.
Willow stood.
“We’re finished.”
“Willow.”
She stopped at the door.
“Did you know about my grandfather?”
“No.”
She believed him.
For some reason, that made everything sadder.
Lucas had not inherited the worst Sterling crime.
He had simply created his own.
The forged trust document became another criminal count.
The anniversary slap became evidence of coercive behavior.
The gallery transfers became evidence of fraud.
Lucas’s cooperation protected him from the harshest possible sentence.
But it could not protect him from consequences.
Outside the courthouse, six hundred guests were no longer laughing.
Many were issuing statements explaining why they had not intervened.
Some claimed they had been shocked.
Others claimed they had never laughed.
Video proved otherwise.
Willow watched none of their apologies.
She had learned that embarrassment belonged to the people who caused cruelty.
