Chapter 15 - UNDER THE FLOOR
Michael stared at Evelyn.
“My shop?”
“Patrick built the first office there.”
“Before Donovan Freight expanded.”
Michael drove everyone back to Oak Park.
Evelyn entered the repair shop for the first time in almost fifty years.
She walked slowly toward Bay Three.
“Patrick used to complain that Charles never got his hands dirty.”
She pointed at the floor.
“That’s why I chose here.”
Michael removed a steel plate beneath an old hydraulic lift.
Under it was a narrow compartment.
Inside sat a sealed metal tube.
Willow opened it.
A small reel-to-reel tape was wrapped in oilcloth.
So was a signed statement.
Charles Sterling’s confession.
He admitted authorizing the sabotage.
He admitted falsifying Donovan ownership records.
He admitted bribing an investigator.
And he named Richard as the person who knew before Patrick’s death.
Michael read the statement twice.
Then he sat on the concrete floor.
Willow knelt beside him.
All her life, Michael had told her that anger was expensive.
That revenge could consume more than it restored.
Now she finally understood why.
He had lived beside a wound he never knew existed.
Federal prosecutors collected the evidence that afternoon.
Richard’s attorney immediately requested negotiations.
The Sterling family’s public statement changed.
They no longer denied wrongdoing.
They blamed Charles.
Then they blamed Richard.
Then Marion issued a statement claiming she had been manipulated for decades.
Lucas said nothing.
That evening, he called Willow from a federal interview room.
“I’m cooperating.”
Willow remained silent.
“They’re offering reduced charges.”
“For helping them?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Lucas sounded hurt by her indifference.
“Do you hate me?”
Willow thought about it.
“No.”
Lucas breathed out.
“Then maybe—”
“I don’t love you either.”
Silence.
“That’s worse,” he whispered.
“Yes.”
Willow ended the call.
The following morning, her attorney filed for divorce.
No negotiation.
No reconciliation.
No Sterling money.
She requested only what legally belonged to her.
Her gallery.
Her personal property.
And complete separation from Lucas.
Then Eleanor called.
The forensic auditors had found something buried inside a Sterling subsidiary.
A document signed five years earlier.
Three days before Willow and Lucas’s wedding.
It changed the ownership of the Donovan trust.
Michael was no longer the only trustee.
Someone had secretly added a second trustee.
