Chapter 14 - EVELYN

Michael refused to surrender the original ledger.

Investigators created a duplicate.

Richard gave them a meeting point.

An old marina thirty miles north of Chicago.

Michael wanted to go.

Willow refused to let him go alone.

At sunrise, they reached the marina beneath heavy gray clouds.

Police watched from concealed positions.

Richard appeared beside an empty boathouse.

He looked twenty years older.

No tailored suit.

No chauffeur.

No Sterling entourage.

Just a frightened man in an expensive coat.

Michael held up the case.

“Where is Evelyn?”

Richard pointed toward a parked sedan.

An elderly woman sat inside.

Michael stopped breathing.

Evelyn stepped out slowly.

She was eighty-two.

Her white hair moved in the wind.

She stared at Michael.

Then she began crying.

“You look like Patrick.”

Michael could not speak.

He crossed the distance and hugged her.

Forty-seven years collapsed in that embrace.

Richard watched impatiently.

“The ledger.”

Michael handed him the case.

Richard opened it.

He immediately realized it was a copy.

“You think I’m stupid?”

Michael’s eyes hardened.

“I think you’re finished.”

Police emerged.

Richard ran.

He made it less than twenty yards.

Officers forced him to the ground.

Willow watched from beside Evelyn.

Richard screamed that the Donovan family had stolen everything from him.

Michael walked toward him.

“No.”

“You stole forty-seven years from us.”

Richard was arrested for financial crimes, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and obstruction.

More charges would follow.

In the police vehicle, he finally looked afraid.

Evelyn spent the afternoon giving investigators her statement.

Then she told Michael the part she had carried alone for decades.

Charles Sterling had ordered a mechanic to sabotage Patrick’s car.

Richard discovered the plan beforehand.

He could have warned Patrick.

He did not.

“Why?”

Michael asked.

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Charles promised him the company.”

Willow felt sick.

Richard had not cut the brake line himself.

He had simply allowed a man to die because he wanted an inheritance.

Then Evelyn revealed something else.

Charles had confessed before his own death.

The confession had been recorded.

And Richard had spent millions trying to find it.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“He never did.”

Michael looked at her.

“Where is it?”

She turned toward Willow.

“In a place Richard would never voluntarily enter.”

Willow frowned.

“Where?”

Evelyn answered.

May you like

“Your father’s repair shop.”
