Chapter 13 - RICHARD RUNS

Richard Sterling disappeared before sunrise.

His private jet requested clearance for Switzerland.

Federal authorities stopped it on the runway.

Richard was not aboard.

His phone was found inside.

His driver claimed he had been dismissed hours earlier.

By noon, Richard Sterling was officially a fugitive from questioning.

News vans surrounded Sterling Tower.

Trading in Sterling Holdings shares was temporarily halted.

Banks demanded information.

Business partners suspended contracts.

The empire had not collapsed yet.

But everyone could hear the foundation cracking.

Michael surprised the board.

He refused to liquidate the company.

“We are not punishing twelve thousand employees for what the Sterling family did.”

Instead, he proposed emergency management.

Independent leadership.

Full forensic accounting.

Protection for pensions.

No bonuses for executives.

No family withdrawals.

Willow watched the board vote.

Unanimous.

Michael had spent decades beneath engines.

Yet he handled terrified bankers more effectively than Lucas ever had.

Afterward, Willow asked him why.

He smiled sadly.

“A broken company and a broken transmission aren’t that different.”

“Stop the leak.”

“Find the damaged part.”

“Don’t throw away the entire machine.”

Willow hugged him.

For the first time since the anniversary party, she felt safe.

Then Amanda called.

Richard had contacted her.

He wanted to meet.

Willow immediately said no.

Amanda shook her head.

“He says he knows where Evelyn North is.”

Michael overheard.

His face changed.

Richard demanded immunity assistance and access to frozen funds.

In return, he would reveal Evelyn’s location.

Michael refused.

“You don’t negotiate with someone holding the truth hostage.”

Amanda looked at Willow.

“What if he hurts her?”

That possibility changed everything.

Federal investigators traced Richard’s call.

It came from an abandoned Sterling warehouse near the river.

The original Donovan Freight property.

Michael stared at the address.

“My father worked there.”

Willow looked at him.

“So did Charles.”

Twenty police vehicles surrounded the warehouse after dark.

But Richard was not inside.

Only a chair.

A burner phone.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed an elderly woman sitting beside a window.

Evelyn North.

Alive.

On the back, Richard had written six words.
