Chapter 1 - THE MAN IN THE BLACK FORD

Willow remained on the terrace long after the cold had numbed her bare shoulders.

Behind the glass doors, the anniversary party had already begun rewriting what happened.

Some guests claimed Lucas had merely pushed her.

Others whispered that Willow had provoked him.

A few insisted she had always been unstable.

That was how powerful families survived ugly truths.

They edited them before the truth could leave the room.

Willow heard the terrace door open.

Lucas stepped outside.

His expression was no longer furious.

It was irritated.

“Enough drama, Willow.”

She stared at him.

Her cheek still burned.

“You hit me.”

“You humiliated my father.”

“So you hit me.”

Lucas glanced through the glass at the watching guests.

“Keep your voice down.”

For the first time in five years, Willow understood something clearly.

Lucas was not ashamed of what he had done.

He was ashamed that people had seen it.

“I called my father.”

Lucas actually laughed.

“The mechanic?”

Willow said nothing.

Lucas loosened his bow tie.

“What is Michael going to do?”

“Change my oil?”

Willow stared at the man she had once promised to love forever.

She had never seen him look smaller.

“You should go back inside.”

Lucas smirked.

“You’re giving me orders now?”

“I’m warning you.”

His smile disappeared.

Before he could answer, noise erupted near the ballroom entrance.

Guests began turning.

Security personnel moved quickly toward the elevators.

Willow stepped through the terrace doors.

A man in a worn navy work jacket was walking across the marble foyer.

Michael Donovan had not changed clothes.

There was grease beneath one thumbnail.

His gray hair was messy from the wind.

His old boots looked completely out of place beneath the chandeliers.

Two security guards blocked him.

“Sir, this is a private event.”

Michael stopped.

“My daughter is inside.”

Richard Sterling appeared behind them.

The moment he recognized Michael, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Willow saw it.

Fear.

Richard quickly covered it with contempt.

“Michael.”

“Richard.”

Lucas came forward.

“This doesn’t concern you.”

Michael looked at him.

Then he saw Willow’s swollen cheek.

Something inside his face became perfectly still.

“Did you do that?”

Lucas crossed his arms.

“She insulted my father.”

Michael nodded slowly.

“So you did.”

Richard stepped between them.

“Get him out of here.”

Michael reached into his jacket.

Several guests gasped.

Security tensed.

But Michael pulled out nothing more dangerous than an old leather wallet.

He removed a black card.

Not a credit card.

A corporate identification card.

He handed it to the nearest security officer.

“Call Sterling Holdings’ general counsel.”

Richard went pale.

Lucas looked confused.

“What the hell is that?”

Michael never looked away from Richard.

“Your grandfather gave it to me thirty-one years ago.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You promised never to use that.”

Michael’s expression remained calm.

“I promised Charles I would stay out of Sterling business as long as his family stayed away from mine.”

His eyes moved toward Willow’s bruised face.

“Your son just ended that agreement.”

For the first time that night, Richard Sterling stopped smiling.

May you like

And Willow realized her father had been hiding something for almost her entire life.
