Chapter 17 - THE FALL OF THE STERLING NAME

Three months later, the Sterling name disappeared from the top of the tower.

Not because Willow demanded it.

Because the board voted.

STERLING HOLDINGS became NORTHSTAR-DONOVAN GROUP.

Employees were allowed to vote on the new name.

Michael hated seeing Donovan on the building.

Willow loved teasing him about it.

“Grandpa would like it.”

Michael grumbled.

“Grandpa liked trucks.”

The company survived.

Its stock recovered slowly.

Stolen pension money was restored.

Executives tied to Richard were removed.

Political contracts were reviewed.

Three subsidiaries were sold to cover restitution.

The empire became smaller.

Cleaner.

Real.

Richard Sterling remained in federal custody awaiting trial.

Marion cooperated fully.

She sold the Lake Forest estate and placed most of her personal fortune into restitution funds.

Nobody called her brave.

Including Willow.

Cooperation after decades of silence was not heroism.

It was simply overdue.

Lucas accepted a plea agreement.

His sentencing hearing drew hundreds of reporters.

Before the judge ruled, Lucas asked permission to speak.

He turned toward Willow.

“I was raised believing love meant loyalty to the family above everything.”

“I used that belief to justify controlling my wife.”

“I humiliated her.”

“I stole from her.”

“And I hit her.”

Willow listened without expression.

“I’m sorry.”

The judge sentenced him to prison.

Not for being a Sterling.

Not for disappointing Willow.

For the crimes he committed.

As officers led him away, Lucas looked back once.

Willow did not.

Outside the courthouse, Michael waited beside the old black Ford.

“You could buy something newer,” Willow said.

“It starts.”

“The passenger window doesn’t work.”

“It mostly starts.”

Willow laughed.

It was the first real laugh she had experienced in months.

Michael opened the door.

“We going to the gallery?”

“Yes.”

Willow’s gallery had reopened that night.

No Sterling money.

No secret corporate transfers.

Just artists.

Collectors.

Friends.

And a new exhibition.

She had named it HANDS THAT BUILT.

The first photograph showed Michael Donovan leaning over an engine.

Grease-stained hands.

Exactly the hands Richard Sterling had mocked.

May you like

Exactly the hands that had held an empire together when the Sterling family finally tore itself apart.
