Chapter 9 - David’s Genetic Lock

Dr. Adler ordered a neurological scan.
Hailey’s brain showed unusual electrical activity.
The capsule had released microscopic carriers into her bloodstream for more than a year.
Some had crossed into her nervous system.
They contained engineered proteins created from David’s genetic samples.
The proteins could not contain memories in the way Mark claimed.
But they could trigger responses to specific sounds, images, and patterns.
Hailey was not hearing her father’s ghost.
She was reacting to conditioning built into the treatment.
Acheron had turned her body into a living password system.
Dr. Adler played several harmless tones.
Hailey reacted strongly to one sequence.
Three high notes.
Two low notes.
One high note.
She whispered a string of numbers without knowing why.
Detective Brooks entered them into Conrad’s archive.
A final encrypted section opened.
David appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in a laboratory.
His face looked exhausted.
“If this recording opens through Hailey’s biological signature, then Acheron ignored every warning I left.”
I began crying before he finished the sentence.
David looked directly into the camera.
“Laura, I am sorry.”
“I never told you the full truth about my work.”
“The capsule system was not designed for treatment.”
“It was designed to identify people through biological reactions that cannot be copied by ordinary technology.”
“Conrad wanted to sell it to governments.”
“Mark Carter wanted to sell it privately.”
I stared at the screen.
David had known Mark.
Years before Mark entered my life.
David continued.
“Mark works under the name Marcus Kane.”
“He is not a financial consultant.”
“He is Acheron’s security director.”
The photograph changed.
A younger Mark stood beside David at the laboratory.
They were not strangers.
They had been partners.
Then David revealed the final truth.

“If I die, do not believe it was an accident.”
“Mark knows where the car will be.”
