Chapter 10 - The Road Where David Died

Police reopened David’s death investigation.

The original accident photographs showed his brake line had been cut.

The evidence had been mislabeled and buried.

The officer who closed the case received payments from Acheron.

Mark entered my life three years later using a carefully prepared identity.

He met me at a charity event.

He knew I was David’s widow.

He knew Hailey carried David’s genetic markers.

Our marriage had never been a coincidence.

Every birthday.

Every family vacation.

Every promise.

He had been waiting until Hailey was old enough for the experiment.

I sat beside her hospital bed.

“I brought him into our home.”

“You didn’t bring him,” Hailey said.

“He found us.”

Her forgiveness hurt more than blame would have.

The raid on the pharmaceutical plant began before sunset.

Police found active servers, surgical equipment, and a recovery room.

Mark was gone.

Dr. Voss was gone.

But one wall held recent surveillance photographs of Hailey’s hospital room.

A camera had been hidden inside the ceiling vent.

Mark had watched the surgery.

He knew Hailey survived.

On a desk, investigators found a printed schedule.

PHASE TWO.

SUBJECT SEVEN TRANSFER.

TIME: 2:00 A.M.

Mark intended to take Hailey from the hospital that night.

Security doubled.

Her room was moved to a private floor.

Every nurse was verified.

Every door required two codes.

At 1:47 a.m., the fire alarm activated.

Smoke filled the lower floors.

Hospital security began evacuating patients.

Dr. Adler refused to move Hailey until the corridor was secured.

Then an emergency medical team appeared.

Their credentials were valid.

Their uniforms were correct.

Their transport order carried Dr. Adler’s signature.

He had never signed it.

The man pushing the gurney removed his mask.

Mark smiled at me.

“Laura.”

“Step away from the girl.”
