Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the Scan

Dr. Adler closed the examination-room door.
He looked first at Hailey, then at me.
“The scan shows a foreign object inside her abdomen.”
My daughter gripped the edge of the exam table.
I stared at him.
“A foreign object?”
“What kind of object?”
“It appears to be a small medical capsule.”
“It is positioned near the lower intestine.”
“Surrounding it is a large area of inflammation.”
My knees nearly gave way.
“How did it get there?”
Dr. Adler hesitated.
“This does not appear to be something she swallowed.”
“The shape, location, and scar tissue suggest it was surgically implanted.”
Hailey made a small sound beside me.
I turned toward her.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Hailey?”
She stared at the floor.
“Mom, I didn’t know.”
“Know what?”
Her hands began shaking.
“I thought he was taking me for a blood test.”
The room became silent.
“Who took you?”
Hailey’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mark.”
My husband.
The man who had insisted she was pretending.
The man who told me not to waste money on doctors.
Dr. Adler moved closer to the bed.
“When did this happen?”
“Last summer.”
“Mom was visiting Grandma.”
“Mark said the school needed new medical records before soccer season.”
“He took me to a clinic outside the city.”
I remembered that weekend.
Mark sent me photographs of Hailey sleeping on the couch.
He said she had caught a stomach virus.
“What happened at the clinic?” I asked.
“They gave me something that made me tired.”
“When I woke up, my side hurt.”
“Mark said they removed a cyst.”
I looked at Dr. Adler.
“Wouldn’t there be a scar?”
He gently lifted the edge of Hailey’s sweatshirt after asking permission.
A faint line rested near her right hip.
I had seen it before.
Mark told me Hailey cut herself climbing a fence during soccer practice.
The lie had been simple.
That was why it worked.
Dr. Adler returned to the scan.
“The capsule may be releasing something into her bloodstream.”
“We need emergency surgery.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Is she going to be all right?”
“I cannot promise anything until we know what the device contains.”
The examination-room handle moved.
Mark’s voice came from the hallway.
“Laura?”
“Open the door.”
“How did he know we were here?” I whispered.
Hailey reached for her phone.
“I didn’t tell him.”
Dr. Adler pressed the security button beside the bed.
Mark struck the door with his fist.
“Laura, you are making a terrible mistake.”
Hailey looked at me in terror.
Then her phone lit up.

A message appeared from Mark.
DO NOT LET THEM REMOVE IT.
