Chapter 7 - Subject Three
Subject Three was named Maya Collins.
She was seventeen.
Her mother, Renee, agreed to meet us at the hospital.
Maya walked with a cane.
She had scars across her abdomen and permanent kidney damage.
Two years earlier, Renee’s boyfriend convinced her to enroll Maya in a nutritional study.
He received fifty thousand dollars.
Maya became sick within months.
When doctors discovered the capsule, the boyfriend disappeared.
His real employer was Acheron Biomedical.
Maya remembered Dr. Voss.
She also remembered Mark.
“He came to the clinic,” she said.
“He asked whether I dreamed about people I had never met.”
Hailey looked at her.
“Did you?”
Maya nodded.
“I kept seeing a woman standing near a lake.”
“Later, they showed me her photograph.”
“She was my biological mother.”
Renee looked confused.
“I am her mother.”
Maya lowered her eyes.
“The woman was my egg donor.”
The capsules were not simply growing cells.
They carried neural proteins designed to preserve fragments of genetic memory.
David had theorized that certain inherited reactions could be mapped through cells.
Acheron twisted the idea into an attempt to store memory outside the brain.
The children were selected because they carried DNA from deceased researchers, donors, or investors.
Hailey had been chosen because she was David’s daughter.
Mark wanted whatever information David had encoded before his death.
Maya remembered one sentence Voss repeated during testing.
“The body remembers what the mind loses.”
Detective Brooks asked whether Maya knew where the hidden clinic was.
She drew a stone building with a narrow tower and a dry fountain.
Hailey recognized the fountain.
The clinic was located on the former estate of Acheron’s founder, Dr. Conrad Adler.
Dr. Adler.
The same surname as Hailey’s hospital physician.
When I confronted him, he did not deny the connection.
“Conrad was my father,” he said.
“He built Acheron.”
“And you never mentioned it?”
“I left the company twenty years ago.”
“Did you know about the capsules?”
“I knew the adult trial existed.”
“I did not know they used children.”
Detective Brooks examined him carefully.
“Why did Mark bring Hailey to your hospital?”
