Chapter 2 - The Man Outside the Door

Hospital security arrived before Mark forced his way inside.

Two guards stood between him and the examination room.

He demanded to see Hailey.

He claimed I had taken his daughter without permission.

Hailey was not his biological daughter.

Her father had died when she was four.

Mark entered our lives three years later.

He had never adopted her.

He had no legal authority to remove her from the hospital.

When Dr. Adler explained that, Mark’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw anger replace concern.

“This doctor is frightening her,” he said.

“She has anxiety.”

“She exaggerates physical symptoms when she wants attention.”

Hailey heard every word through the door.

She folded her arms around herself.

“He always says that.”

I sat beside her.

“How long has he been saying it?”

“Since the clinic.”

Every time her stomach hurt, Mark accused her of seeking attention.

Every time she became dizzy, he said she had skipped breakfast.

Every time she asked to see a doctor, he told her our insurance would not cover unnecessary testing.

He had spent months teaching her not to trust her own body.

A police officer arrived.

Mark immediately became calm.

He explained that I was emotional.

He said Hailey had a history of dramatic behavior.

Then Dr. Adler stepped into the hallway holding the scan.

“Mr. Carter, can you explain why your stepdaughter has an implanted medical device that does not appear in any official record?”

Mark looked at the image.

He did not seem surprised.

That was the moment the officer stopped treating the situation as a family disagreement.

“I want an attorney,” Mark said.

“You are not under arrest,” the officer replied.

“Then I’m leaving.”

He turned toward the elevators.

Hailey rushed to the door.

“Stop him.”

The officer asked why.

She unlocked her phone and opened a hidden folder.

Inside were photographs of prescription bottles from Mark’s office.

Most had no patient names.

One carried a silver logo shaped like a bird.

Dr. Adler recognized it.

“Acheron Biomedical.”

The company had funded experimental drug-delivery capsules.

The clinical trials were suspended after several adult patients developed organ damage.

Mark worked for Acheron.

He had always described himself as a financial consultant.

Hailey scrolled to the final photograph.

It showed Mark standing beside a physician inside the clinic.

The physician was holding a surgical tray.

On it were six capsules identical to the object in Hailey’s scan.
