Chapter 8 - The Doctor’s Hidden Message

Dr. Adler explained that his father had died six months earlier.
Conrad left behind a locked research archive.
The archive required three pieces of authentication.
A physical capsule.
Genetic material from David Monroe’s family.
And a code known only to Conrad’s surviving son.
Dr. Adler possessed the code.
Mark possessed Hailey.
The emergency surgery had brought all three pieces into the same hospital.
“You think Mark planned for the capsule to rupture?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“The microchip transmitted a signal the moment it was removed.”
Detective Brooks checked the hospital network.
A hidden device had connected to the surgical system during Hailey’s operation.
It downloaded scan data, tissue readings, and Dr. Adler’s authentication credentials.
Mark had not wanted to stop us from removing the capsule.
His message had ensured we acted quickly and predictably.
He used our rescue attempt to open Conrad’s archive.
Dr. Adler looked sick.
“My father warned me that Acheron would come back for David’s work.”
“What is inside the archive?”
“Evidence.”
“Research records.”
“Payment lists.”
“And David’s final video.”
My husband had manipulated everyone.
Me.
Hailey.
The hospital.
Even the police.
Acheron’s remote server went active at 3:17 that afternoon.
Someone began downloading the archive.
The signal came from an abandoned pharmaceutical plant outside the city.
Police prepared a raid.
Then Hailey’s monitor alarm sounded.
Her heart rate spiked.
She gripped her head.
“Make it stop.”
Dr. Adler rushed to her.
“What do you feel?”
“Someone is talking.”
“Who?”
Hailey looked toward me.
“Dad.”
Her eyes filled with terror.
“He keeps saying the same thing.”
“What is he saying?”
She pressed both hands against her ears.

“The capsule was not the key.”
“I am.”
