Chapter 6 – The Message She Was Never Supposed to Hear
Emily sat in silence long after the call ended.
The office around her continued moving.
Phones rang.
People talked outside the door.
Reporters shouted questions in the hallway.
But none of it reached her.
Because one sentence kept repeating inside her mind.
Your mother left you a message.
For twenty-two years, Emily had believed Caroline Bennett was the person who hurt her most.
Her father had been cruel.
But her mother had been worse in a different way.
Because Richard attacked openly.
Caroline smiled while doing it.
She hugged Emily in front of relatives.
She told everyone she loved her daughter.
Then, when no one was watching, she destroyed her confidence piece by piece.
Emily remembered being sixteen.
The night she found out her college savings account was empty.
She had stood in the kitchen holding the bank statement.
"Mom..."
"Where is the money?"
Caroline hadn't even looked guilty.
She had simply poured herself coffee and answered:
"Your father needed it."
"It was for the family."
Emily had asked the question that broke something inside her.
"Am I part of the family?"
Her mother had looked at her.
And said nothing.
That silence had hurt more than any insult.
Now Daniel Carter was saying Caroline had left her something.
A message.
A secret.
A reason.
Emily didn't know whether she wanted to hear it.
An hour later, Emily arrived at Daniel Carter's office.
She brought Professor Hughes with her.
She wasn't making the same mistake twice.
She would never stand alone against the Bennetts again.
Daniel opened the door immediately.
He looked older than Emily expected.
Tired.
Like someone who had carried a heavy secret for years.
"Thank you for coming."
Emily stepped inside.
"You said my mother left me a message."
Daniel nodded.
Then he placed an old silver laptop on the table.
"This belonged to Caroline."
Emily stared at it.
"Why do you have it?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because she gave it to me."
"When?"
"Six years ago."
Emily's expression hardened.
"Six years ago?"
"She knew all of this was happening?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
And that told Emily everything.
"She knew."
"Yes."
The word hurt.
Even though Emily had expected it.
"Then why didn't she help me?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because she was afraid."
Emily almost laughed.
"Afraid?"
"She watched him destroy my life."
Daniel nodded sadly.
"I know."
"Then she was part of it."
Daniel didn't argue.
"You're right."
The honesty surprised her.
"But she was also trying to protect you in the only way she knew how."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"Don't do that."
"Don't make excuses for her."
Daniel opened the laptop.
"I won't."
"Just watch."
He pressed play.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
Caroline Bennett sat alone in a dark room.
She looked different.
Older.
Exhausted.
Not the elegant woman Emily knew from family events.
Not the perfect wife.
Just a tired woman.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
"Emily..."
Emily stopped breathing.
Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
"If you are watching this, then something happened."
"I don't know if I will still be able to protect you."
Emily's fingers tightened.
The video continued.
"Your father will tell you that you were selfish."
"He will tell you that you destroyed this family."
"He will tell you that everything happened because of you."
Caroline shook her head.
"Please don't believe him."
Emily looked away.
Her eyes burned.
Because those were the exact words her father had used that morning.
Caroline continued.
"The truth is..."
"I made a terrible mistake."
"I stayed silent for too long."
A tear fell down her face.
"And my silence allowed him to hurt you."
Emily felt her chest tighten.
The woman on the screen continued.
"Richard doesn't want your diploma."
"He doesn't want your reputation."
"He wants something much more valuable."
Daniel watched Emily carefully.
Then the video revealed the truth.
"The research you created isn't just an academic project."
"It is worth millions."
Emily froze.
Caroline whispered:
"And your father knows it."
A pause.
"Because he didn't steal your research."
"He stole something from me."
The screen suddenly glitched.
The video stopped.
Daniel immediately checked the laptop.
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"What happened?"
Daniel's face changed.
"Someone accessed this file remotely."
"Someone?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
His expression became serious.
"Someone who knew we would find it."
Emily slowly stood.
Because she finally understood.
Richard Bennett wasn't just reacting anymore.
He was attacking.
