Chapter 13 – The Recording That Changed the Case

Emily held the small piece of paper in her hand.
Your father knows everything.
Four words.
But they carried the weight of a lifetime.
She looked down the empty hallway.
Whoever left the message was gone.
But one thing was certain.
Richard Bennett was no longer reacting to the truth.
He was hunting it.
Inside the hotel room, Caroline watched Emily carefully.
"You need to leave."
Emily turned.
"What?"
"Right now."
"Why?"
Caroline's eyes moved toward the door.
"Because if Richard knows I gave you that drive, he will come after you."
Emily stared at her mother.
"He already has."
Caroline looked away.
The guilt on her face was impossible to miss.
For years, Emily had wanted her mother to admit what she had done.
Now that she finally had...
It didn't feel like victory.
It felt like mourning.
Mourning the mother she wished she had.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Caroline looked confused.
"Tell you what?"
"The truth."
Emily's voice broke.
"All those years."
"You watched him destroy me."
"You watched everyone believe his lies."
"Why?"
Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I thought I could fix it."
Emily shook her head.
"You can't fix something by hiding it."
"I know."
A pause.
"I know now."
That night, Emily returned to Daniel's office.
The entire team gathered around the old flash drive.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
This was different.
The previous evidence proved corruption.
Manipulation.
Fraud.
But this recording could prove something much bigger.
Daniel inserted the drive.
A single file appeared.
Thomas Bennett — Final Statement
Emily held her breath.
The recording began.
Static.
Then an older man's voice filled the room.
"If you are hearing this..."
"My son has already taken everything from me."
Emily closed her eyes.
Her grandfather.
The man she never knew.
The man her father erased.
Thomas continued.
"Richard believes power comes from ownership."
"He believes people are only valuable when they serve him."
A pause.
"But he made one mistake."
"He underestimated my granddaughter."
Emily opened her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
The recording continued.
"Emily..."
"Your father will tell you that your ideas belong to him."
"He will tell you that your success came from his name."
"Do not believe him."
"Your mind is your own."
"Your work is your own."
"Your future is your own."
Emily felt tears forming.
Because those words were everything she had needed to hear as a child.
The recording continued.
"I discovered Richard's agreement with the Blackwell Group."
"He intended to transfer ownership of Emily's research before she graduated."
"He also intended to remove me from control of my own company."
Daniel leaned closer.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"Richard has arranged a meeting with Victor Blackwell."
"The purpose of that meeting..."
"Is to finalize the permanent removal of Emily Bennett from the company records."
Emily froze.
"Removal?"
Daniel looked at her.
"He planned to erase your legal existence in the company."
The recording continued.
"If anything happens to me, this recording must reach Emily."
"She must know the truth."
"She must know that her father was never protecting the family."
"He was protecting himself."
Then came a final sound.
A door opening.
A man's voice.
Richard.
Young.
Angry.
The room went completely silent.
Thomas spoke.
"Richard."
"What are you doing here?"
Then Richard answered.
"You should have stayed out of my business."
Emily covered her mouth.
Because she knew what came next.
A struggle.
A crash.
A moment of silence.
Then Thomas' final words.
"Emily..."
"Don't let him win."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The truth was finally complete.
The next morning, federal investigators arrived.
The evidence was no longer a family dispute.
It was a criminal investigation.
Financial crimes.
Corporate fraud.
Intellectual property theft.
And possible murder.
Richard Bennett was contacted for questioning.
But before investigators reached his mansion...
He disappeared.
His private jet was already preparing for takeoff.
Emily watched the news report.
"Richard Bennett has left the country."
Daniel's face tightened.
"He knew."
Emily looked at the screen.
"No."
"He planned."
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Emily Bennett."
She froze.
Because she recognized it.
Victor Blackwell.
"You found your grandfather's recording."
Emily said nothing.
Victor continued.
"Congratulations."
"You finally learned the truth."
"Now let me tell you something else."
A pause.
"Your father wasn't running from the police."
"He was running from me."
Emily's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
Victor's voice became cold.
"Because Richard Bennett stole something from the Blackwell Group."
"What?"
"The original research files."
Emily felt her heart sink.
"That's impossible."
Victor laughed softly.
"No."
"What's impossible..."
"...is that you still think this story is only about your family."
The call ended.
And Emily realized something terrifying.
May you like
Her father wasn't the final enemy.
He was only the beginning.
