Chapter 5 – The Man Who Kept the Missing Pieces

The livestream continued spreading across the internet.

Within an hour, Emily Bennett's graduation ceremony had become the biggest story on campus.

People weren't talking about the slap anymore.

They weren't talking about the accusations.

They were talking about the evidence.

The truth.

But Emily didn't know that someone else had been watching.

Someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

Across the city, inside a quiet office filled with old legal documents, a middle-aged man stared at his computer screen.

His name was Daniel Carter.

For twelve years, Daniel had been Richard Bennett's personal attorney.

He had helped build Bennett Holdings from a small company into a national corporation.

He knew every contract.

Every secret.

Every lie.

And now he was watching the daughter of the man he once admired expose the truth.

Daniel removed his glasses slowly.

"She finally did it."

On his desk sat an old brown envelope.

The name written on it was familiar.

Emily Bennett.

He had kept that envelope hidden for six years.

Not because he wanted to protect Richard.

Because he had promised someone he would protect Emily.

Someone who was no longer alive.

At the university, Emily sat inside Professor Hughes' office.

The noise from outside was overwhelming.

Reporters.

Students.

Security.

Everyone wanted answers.

But Emily just stared out the window.

For the first time in hours, she was alone.

"Are you okay?"

Professor Hughes' voice was gentle.

Emily almost laughed.

It was such a simple question.

Are you okay?

No one in her family had asked her that in years.

"I don't know," Emily admitted.

The dean sat across from her.

"You don't have to be strong every second."

Emily looked down.

"I spent my whole life trying to prove I wasn't what they said I was."

"And now everyone knows."

"But somehow..."

Her voice cracked.

"I still feel like I'm waiting for someone to tell me I'm wrong."

Professor Hughes understood.

Because emotional wounds didn't disappear just because the truth came out.

Then Emily's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Finally, she answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice spoke.

"Emily Bennett?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Carter."

Emily immediately became cautious.

The name sounded familiar.

"My father's attorney?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Her expression changed.

"If you're calling to defend him, don't waste your time."

"I'm not."

The seriousness in his voice stopped her.

"I'm calling because I owe you the truth."

Emily said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"Your father didn't start destroying your future on graduation day."

"He started planning it years ago."

Emily looked at Professor Hughes.

The dean immediately understood.

"Where are you?"

Daniel gave an address.

"Come alone."

Emily frowned.

"No."

A long silence.

Then Daniel sighed.

"Good."

"Because that's exactly the mistake your father expected you to make."

Emily tightened her grip on the phone.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"It means Richard Bennett has spent years preparing for the moment you exposed him."

"He knew this day might come."

Emily felt a chill.

"He prepared?"

"Yes."

"And he created a backup plan."

"What kind of backup plan?"

Daniel looked at the envelope on his desk.

The one he had protected for six years.

"The kind that could make everyone believe you are the villain again."

Emily's heart sank.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel's voice lowered.

"I'm saying your father has evidence."

"Fake evidence."

"Enough to destroy your reputation."

The room became silent.

Professor Hughes watched Emily's face.

She could tell something had changed.

"What evidence?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"The evidence that could make the world believe you stole your own research."

Emily closed her eyes.

For one moment...

Fear returned.

Because Richard Bennett had always been one step ahead.

But then she remembered the flash drive.

The recordings.

The documents.

The years she spent collecting proof.

She opened her eyes.

"Mr. Carter."

"Yes?"

"My father made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

Emily looked at the evidence sitting on the desk.

"He thought I was collecting proof because I wanted revenge."

A pause.

"But I was collecting proof because I knew he would lie."

Daniel said nothing.

Because he knew she was right.

Then he spoke.

"Emily..."

"There's something else."

"What?"

"The flash drive you have..."

"It isn't the only copy."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Your father doesn't know this."

"But your mother did something years ago."

"Something that even Richard couldn't control."

Emily stood slowly.

"What did she do?"

Daniel answered.

"She left you a message."

Emily's breath stopped.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"And Emily..."

"That message explains why they were so afraid of you graduating."

The call ended.

Emily stared at the phone.

For twenty-two years, she believed her mother never protected her.

But now she had to consider the impossible.

Maybe Caroline Bennett had been hiding something.

Maybe the biggest secret in her family...

May you like

Wasn't what they had done to Emily.

It was what they had tried to hide from her.
