Chapter 3 – The Name They Tried to Erase

The silence after Professor Hughes' announcement felt heavier than any accusation Emily had ever faced.

For years, she had imagined this moment.

She imagined exposing the truth.

She imagined her parents finally being forced to admit what they had done.

But she never imagined the feeling that came afterward.

Not victory.

Not satisfaction.

Just relief.

A deep, exhausted relief.

Because for twenty-two years, Emily Bennett had been carrying a story that was never hers.

The story that she was difficult.

The story that she was selfish.

The story that she was a disappointment.

And now, in front of hundreds of witnesses, that story was finally breaking apart.

Professor Hughes looked at the audience.

"As dean of this university, I want to make something very clear."

Her voice was firm.

"Emily Bennett's academic record has been reviewed multiple times."

"She earned every grade."

"She completed every requirement."

"She created the research that received international recognition."

The crowd erupted in applause.

A few graduates stood.

Then more.

Within seconds, the courtyard that had watched Emily being humiliated was now standing for her.

Emily looked down.

She couldn't stop the tears forming in her eyes.

Not because she was weak.

Because for the first time...

People were standing with her.

Richard Bennett stared at the crowd.

His face had lost all color.

"This is ridiculous," he muttered.

"No one understands the full situation."

Emily slowly turned toward him.

"No."

"You just never expected anyone to hear the full situation."

His expression hardened.

"You think this changes anything?"

"You think people will suddenly forget who you are?"

Emily stared at him.

"Actually..."

"I think they finally know."

Richard's hands curled into fists.

"You ungrateful little—"

"Mr. Bennett."

Professor Hughes interrupted sharply.

"You will not speak to her that way on university property."

Richard stopped.

Because for the first time in his life...

Someone had told him no.

And there was nothing he could do about it.

Then a university officer approached Professor Hughes.

"Dean."

"We received confirmation from the academic integrity department."

She looked at the report.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Ethan Bennett's research submission has been officially flagged."

The crowd became quiet again.

The officer continued.

"The plagiarism evidence is overwhelming."

"Ethan Bennett will be placed under immediate investigation."

Ethan's face collapsed.

"No."

He looked at his father.

"Dad, you said nobody would find out."

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

Everyone heard.

Especially the reporters who had just entered the courtyard.

Cameras immediately turned toward him.

Richard snapped.

"Ethan!"

But it was too late.

The perfect Bennett family image had cracked.

And everyone could see what was underneath.

A reporter stepped forward.

"Mr. Bennett!"

"Did you pressure your daughter to leave university?"

"Did you help your son steal academic work?"

"Did you interfere with scholarship funding?"

Question after question exploded.

Richard tried pushing through the crowd.

"This is a private matter."

But nobody moved.

Not anymore.

Because the man who had always controlled the room had finally lost control.

Emily watched silently.

She should have felt angry.

She should have felt revenge.

But instead, she felt something unexpected.

Freedom.

Professor Hughes approached her.

"Emily."

She lowered her voice.

"There is something else you should know."

Emily looked at her.

"What?"

The dean hesitated.

"Your original research files..."

"We found something unusual."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Professor Hughes handed her a printed document.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature Emily recognized immediately.

Her father's.

But the date was from six years earlier.

Before Emily had even started university.

She read the document.

Then her entire body went still.

Because the paper proved one terrifying truth.

May you like

Richard Bennett had been planning to destroy her future...

Long before graduation day.
