Chapter 11 – The Brother Who Finally Spoke

The message remained on Emily's phone.
Six words.
Six carefully chosen words.
Stop searching, Emily. Or disappear.
For most people, a threat like that would create fear.
But Emily Bennett had spent her entire life living under threats.
Some were spoken.
Some were hidden behind smiles.
Some came from the people who were supposed to love her.
She looked at the screen again.
Then she locked her phone.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"No?"
Emily looked up.
"I spent twenty-two years being afraid of them."
A pause.
"I'm done."
Professor Hughes watched her carefully.
"You understand this may become dangerous."
Emily nodded.
"I know."
"But if I stop now..."
She looked at the documents spread across the table.
"My father wins."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew she was right.
Across town, Ethan Bennett sat alone inside his apartment.
The television was still playing news coverage about his family.
Every channel showed the same image.
Emily standing at the graduation podium.
The flash drive in her hand.
His father's face falling apart.
Ethan turned the television off.
For the first time in his life, there was no one telling him what to do.
No father controlling the story.
No mother fixing his mistakes.
No family name protecting him.
Only the truth.
And the truth was terrifying.
His entire life had been built on someone else's stolen work.
He looked at the research award sitting on his shelf.
The award with his name on it.
The award he never earned.
A knock came at the door.
Ethan froze.
For a moment, he thought it was his father.
But when he opened it...
Emily was standing there.
He immediately stepped back.
"What are you doing here?"
Emily looked at him.
"We need to talk."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Now you want to talk?"
"No."
"I want the truth."
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Because he knew exactly what she meant.
Emily walked inside.
"You knew."
Ethan looked away.
"You knew what Dad was doing."
Silence.
"Didn't you?"
His shoulders dropped.
"Yes."
The answer was quiet.
But it was enough.
Emily stared at him.
"How long?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Since I was eighteen."
The pain in her face was obvious.
But she didn't leave.
"Tell me everything."
Ethan sat down.
And for the first time...
He stopped defending himself.
"Dad told me I was supposed to be the future of the family."
"He said you were talented, but you didn't understand business."
Emily almost smiled.
"Of course he did."
Ethan looked ashamed.
"He told me if I used your research, nobody would know."
"He said he would fix everything."
"And I believed him."
Emily's voice was cold.
"You didn't believe him."
"You wanted what I had."
Ethan looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised her.
"I was jealous."
"I hated that people respected you."
"I hated that you didn't need Dad's approval."
A long silence followed.
Then Ethan whispered:
"But I never thought he would hurt you like this."
Emily looked at him.
"You watched him."
"I know."
"And I hate myself for that."
For the first time, Ethan didn't look like the arrogant younger brother from graduation day.
He looked like someone finally forced to see what he had become.
Then he reached into his jacket.
And placed a small envelope on the table.
Emily stared.
"What is that?"
Ethan answered:
"The thing Dad doesn't know I have."
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a copy of a private email.
From Richard Bennett.
The subject line:
FINAL PLAN FOR EMILY BENNETT
Emily read the message.
Her expression changed.
Because it wasn't just about destroying her reputation.
It was about something much worse.
Richard had planned to have Emily declared mentally unstable.
He had prepared documents.
Witness statements.
Fake medical records.
Everything.
Daniel's warning echoed in her mind.
Fake evidence.
Enough to destroy her.
Emily looked at Ethan.
"Why are you giving me this now?"
Ethan's eyes filled with regret.
"Because I saw Dad talking to Blackwell."
"And I realized something."
"What?"
Ethan looked at his sister.
"He was never protecting me."
A pause.
"He was using me too."
Emily folded the document.
For years, Ethan had been part of the problem.
But now he might also be the key to ending it.
Then Emily's phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered immediately.
"Emily."
His voice sounded urgent.
"We found the person who stole your grandfather's files."
Emily stood.
"Who?"
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
"The person was not working for Richard."
Emily frowned.
"Then who?"
Daniel's answer changed everything.
"Your mother."
Emily went completely still.
May you like
Because once again...
Caroline Bennett was hiding the truth.
