Chapter 10 – The Grandfather They Erased

Emily couldn't move.
The words echoed in her mind.
The man your father told everyone died before you were born.
Her grandfather.
A person she had never met.
A person whose name had never been mentioned in the Bennett household.
A person who apparently held the first piece of the entire mystery.
"That's impossible," Emily whispered.
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"Why?"
"Because my father said he died before I was born."
Daniel nodded.
"That's what everyone was told."
"But it's not true."
Emily looked at the photograph again.
The young Richard Bennett stood beside Victor Blackwell.
And beside them was an older man.
Confident.
Serious.
Holding the original agreement.
The name underneath the signature was clear.
Thomas Bennett.
Emily had spent twenty-two years believing she came from a simple family history.
Her father had always said his own father abandoned him.
That he built everything himself.
That Bennett Holdings existed because Richard was a genius businessman who started from nothing.
A lie.
Another lie.
"Who was Thomas Bennett?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"The real founder of Bennett Holdings."
Emily looked up.
"My father?"
"Your father inherited it."
"He didn't create it."
The truth felt almost strange.
Because Richard had spent his entire life building a story where he was the hero.
The self-made billionaire.
The man who had overcome everything.
But behind that image was another reality.
He had taken everything from the people around him.
Including his own daughter.
Daniel opened another file.
"This is the last document your grandfather left."
Emily stared at the screen.
A scanned letter appeared.
The handwriting was old.
The date was twenty-three years earlier.
Before Emily was born.
She read the first line.
To my future granddaughter,
Her heart stopped.
"Why would he write to me?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Because he knew Richard."
The letter continued.
"If you are reading this, it means my son has continued the path I feared."
Emily swallowed.
"Richard has always believed power comes from controlling people. He does not understand that true success comes from protecting what you create."
The next sentence made Emily freeze.
"The greatest mistake I made was trusting him with my company."
She continued reading.
"My granddaughter must never allow him to take ownership of her ideas, her voice, or her future."
Emily looked away.
For the first time, someone in her family had written words that felt like they were meant for her.
Not against her.
For her.
Then came the final paragraph.
"Richard will attempt to erase this letter. He will erase my name. He will erase anyone who challenges him."
"But he cannot erase the truth forever."
The screen went dark.
Emily sat quietly.
Then she whispered:
"He knew."
Daniel nodded.
"Your grandfather knew what Richard was becoming."
"And he tried to stop him."
"But failed."
That evening, Richard Bennett appeared on national television.
He looked calm.
Sympathetic.
Perfect.
The same performance he had used his entire life.
"My daughter is brilliant," he said.
"But unfortunately, she has been manipulated by people who want to destroy our family."
Emily watched from Daniel's office.
She almost admired his ability to lie.
Almost.
Then the interviewer asked:
"Mr. Bennett, what about the accusations that you stole your daughter's research?"
Richard smiled.
A calculated smile.
"That accusation is impossible."
"Why?"
"Because Emily never created the technology alone."
Emily frowned.
Daniel immediately looked at the television.
"What is he doing?"
Richard continued.
"The original concepts came from my father's research."
Emily froze.
The room became silent.
"He is claiming your grandfather's work belongs to him."
Daniel's expression turned dark.
"He is rewriting history."
On television, Richard continued.
"My daughter has misunderstood her own family's legacy."
Emily watched him.
Then something changed.
She stopped feeling hurt.
Stopped feeling shocked.
Because now she understood.
Richard wasn't fighting to protect himself.
He was fighting because if the truth came out...
Everything he built would collapse.
His company.
His reputation.
His entire identity.
Emily slowly stood.
"Where is my grandfather's original archive?"
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
"If Richard is using his name..."
"Then we need the one thing he can't fake."
Daniel understood.
"The original records."
Emily nodded.
"Exactly."
But before they could leave...
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then:
"Are you sure?"
Emily watched him.
"Who was it?"
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
"The police."
"Someone broke into the university archives."
Emily's heart sank.
"What did they take?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Your grandfather's files."
A cold silence filled the room.
Then he added:
"And they left something behind."
Emily stared.
"What?"
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"A message."
He handed her the phone.
May you like
The message contained only six words.
Stop searching, Emily. Or disappear.
