Chapter 6 - THE HERO AFTER THE CRASH

Reed built his entire public identity around caring for the woman he helped injure.
That truth was almost impossible for Maren to absorb.
He attended physical therapy.
Installed ramps.
Commissioned a custom elevator.
Learned how to transfer her from bed to wheelchair.
He held her during phantom pain.
He kissed the scar along her spine.
Sometimes evil would be easier if people were evil every minute.
Reed was not.
He could be tender.
Funny.
Patient.
Then selfish.
Cowardly.
Criminal.
All inside the same man.
Maren hated that complexity.
She wanted the past simplified.
It refused.
“What did he gain after my accident?”
She asked Evelyn.
“Access.”
“To what?”
“You stopped attending meetings for almost a year.”
“Reed carried your proxy.”
“He learned the internal structure.”
“He met Graham regularly.”
“And he discovered something your father had kept hidden.”
“What?”
“The Whitaker Founder Shares.”
Maren frowned.
She knew about ordinary voting stock.
The Founder Shares were different.
A protected block created when Whitaker Medical Holdings went public.
They carried veto rights over mergers, liquidation, and changes to certain trusts.
Maren inherited them after her father died.
But the shares had one unusual provision.
If Maren died without a surviving child, authority passed through her spouse under a temporary seven-year stewardship before moving to the foundation.
Maren stared.
“I don’t have children.”
“Exactly.”
“If you died today.”
Evelyn said.
“Reed would temporarily control the Founder Shares.”
“And with Graham’s remaining allies, he could force a restructuring.”
“The insurance was twelve million.”
Maren whispered.
“But the real prize was the company.”
May you like
Evelyn nodded.
“Now you understand why twelve million was too small to be the whole motive.”
