Chapter 19 - THE SISTERS
Celeste was sentenced.
Before entering custody, she wrote Maren a letter.
Twelve pages.
Maren read only three.
Then stopped.
Not because the rest was meaningless.
Because she no longer needed every explanation.
Celeste wrote.
I thought everything you had was proof there was less left for me.
Maren understood the sentence.
She did not excuse it.
Their parents loved both daughters.
Differently.
Maren inherited corporate responsibility because she had trained for it.
Celeste interpreted difference as rejection.
Graham fed that wound.
Reed used it.
But Celeste still made choices.
Maren placed the unfinished letter in a drawer.
Evelyn asked.
“Will you ever see her?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s fair.”
“Do you?”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“She is my daughter too.”
Maren felt an old ache.
Then Evelyn added.
May you like
“But being someone’s mother does not require pretending they are safe.”
That was perhaps the only sentence Maren needed.
