Eight months later, Maren underwent surgery.
Not to become someone new.
Not to prove she had defeated Reed.
Because the medical team believed it could reduce pain and possibly improve function.
Rehabilitation was brutal.
For weeks, nothing dramatic happened.
Then sensation returned farther down her left leg.
Later, a muscle responded.
Then another.
One morning, supported between parallel bars, Maren pushed upward.
Her arms shook.
Her legs trembled.
She stood for eleven seconds.
Evelyn cried.
Maren laughed.
“Stop.”
“I’m allowed.”
“No.”
“You’re making this weird.”
Evelyn laughed through tears.
Maren sat back into her wheelchair.
Exhausted.
Happy.
Still herself.
Months later, she could stand with support.
Take limited assisted steps.
She continued using her wheelchair for mobility.
Reporters eventually learned.
They wanted the miracle story.
Maren declined.
The miracle had happened on the dining-room floor.
She had been dying.
