Chapter 14 - THE FATHER'S FINAL VIDEO
The third dead-switch press opened one file nobody expected.
A video recorded by Maren’s father three weeks before his death.
Thomas Whitaker sat behind his old desk.
Thinner than Maren remembered.
Tired.
But unmistakably himself.
“If you are seeing this.”
He said.
“Then something has gone badly enough that hiding the truth became more dangerous than telling it.”
Maren cried before he finished the first sentence.
Her father continued.
“I failed you in two ways.”
“I kept your mother’s survival from you.”
“And I allowed suspicion of Reed to remain suspicion because I was afraid confronting him would push him deeper toward Graham.”
Maren covered her mouth.
“I hoped Reed’s devotion after your accident meant guilt had changed him.”
“I may have confused remorse with character.”
That sentence cut deeply.
Then Thomas explained the dead switch.
The accounts.
The microphones.
The emergency archive.
Evelyn’s signal.
Then.
“There is one final mechanism.”
Maren leaned closer.
“If the third signal activates, Founder Share authority moves into a seventy-two-hour protected hold.”
“No spouse.”
“No proxy.”
“No board member can exercise those rights.”
“Only Maren.”
“Or, if Maren is medically incapacitated, Evelyn.”
Reed’s entire murder plan had contained a fatal mistake.
Even if Maren died, the emergency signal froze the Founder Shares before his spousal stewardship could activate.
He had poisoned the only person capable of pressing the button.
And she pressed it.
Thomas smiled faintly at the camera.
“Maren.”
“If you found the switch.”
“I was right about one thing.”
“You always were the smartest person in the room.”
