Chapter 9 - HOME

The Bennett family house had been empty for eighteen years.
Lisa owned it.
She simply never visited.
Too many ghosts.
By dawn, the property was surrounded.
No vehicles.
No movement.
No thermal signatures except one person inside.
Captain Cole wanted to send a tactical team first.
Lisa agreed.
This time she had no intention of walking into another trap.
They entered through the front and cleared each room.
Kitchen.
Living room.
Upstairs bedrooms.
Basement.
Then Cole called Lisa inside.
James Bennett was sitting at the dining-room table.
Seventy-one years old.
Thin.
White hair.
Hands shaking.
Alive.
Lisa stopped in the doorway.
Her father looked up.
For a moment neither moved.
Then James stood.
“Lisa.”
She crossed the room and hugged him.
Twenty-four years of questions vanished into one impossible moment.
James held her like she was still eight.
“I’m sorry.”
Lisa closed her eyes.
Everyone in her family seemed to begin with those words.
Later, after doctors examined him, James told the story.
Rebecca had kept him moving between private residences for years.
Not chained.
Not imprisoned in the traditional sense.
She used threats.
If James ran, Daniel died.
If he contacted Lisa, Lisa died.
If he spoke publicly, evidence would appear making Daniel responsible for Sentinel.
Rebecca understood leverage better than locks.
James had tried escaping twice.
Both attempts ended with someone innocent being hurt.
So he stopped.
Lisa asked why Rebecca released him now.
James looked toward Captain Cole.
“She didn’t.”
Claire did.
Claire had located him months earlier.
She waited until the gala operation created enough confusion to extract him.
Lisa’s anger toward Claire shifted again.
James touched his daughter’s hand.
“You can’t trust Claire completely.”
Lisa looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Claire’s father founded Sentinel with Marcus.”
Silence filled the room.
James explained.
Colonel Thomas Morgan had been one of the original officers who discovered how valuable the compromised financial network could become.
Marcus Bennett was not a founder.
Marcus had joined later.
Thomas Morgan had built the architecture Rebecca eventually controlled.
Claire grew up believing her father had died honorably.
Years later she discovered what he had created.
She infiltrated Sentinel to destroy it.
But blood complicated everything.
“She still wants to protect his name.”
James said.
“Even after everything?”
“Especially after everything.”
Lisa understood.
Claire wanted Sentinel exposed.
But she wanted her father’s role buried.
That could explain missing files.
Altered evidence.
Selective leaks.
Captain Cole’s radio sounded.
A raid team had recovered Marcus’s private storage unit.
Inside were gala records, cash and dozens of ceremonial military objects.
One item stood out.
A ledger handwritten by Thomas Morgan.
Claire’s father.
It documented Sentinel’s first ten years.
Every founder.
Every payment.
Every illegal operation.
It could prove everything.
Captain Cole looked at Lisa.
“Where’s Claire?”
Lisa checked the secure tracker Noah had placed on Claire after the ballroom shooting.
The signal was moving fast.
Toward the storage facility.
Lisa stood.
“She knows about the ledger.”
Captain Cole called the raid team.
No response.
Then the tracker stopped moving.
Seconds later Cole received a live security image.
Claire stood inside the storage unit.
The ledger was in her hand.
Across from her stood Ryan.
No handcuffs.
No guards.
Lisa stared at the screen.
“How did he get out?”
Captain Cole’s face turned grim.
“He didn’t.”
The camera angle shifted.
An investigator lay unconscious near the door.
May you like
Ryan had escaped.
And he was holding Marcus’s ceremonial baton.
