Chapter 8 - CLAIRE’S SIDE

Lisa did not go alone.
She simply made Rebecca believe she did.
By two thirty in the morning, Captain Cole had surrounded the gala hotel with teams positioned three blocks away.
No marked vehicles.
No visible tactical presence.
Lisa entered through the underground garage wearing a transmitter hidden beneath the bandage around her ribs.
Daniel hated the plan.
But Lisa reminded him that Rebecca had built her strategy around one assumption.
That Lisa reacted emotionally.
Rebecca thought daughters needed answers more than they needed control.
Lisa intended to prove otherwise.
The ballroom was empty.
Tables had been prepared for four hundred guests arriving the next evening.
Black linens.
Silver place settings.
Military memorabilia displayed beneath spotlights.
At the center of the room stood Rebecca Bennett.
Alive.
Lisa stopped twenty feet away.
For the first time in twenty-seven years, mother and daughter looked at each other.
Rebecca smiled.
“You look like your father.”
Lisa felt nothing she expected.
No warmth.
No grief.
Only anger.
“You watched us bury an empty coffin.”
Rebecca’s smile weakened.
“I did what survival required.”
“You abandoned your children.”
“I protected you.”
“By marrying me to Ryan?”
Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.
“So Daniel told you.”
Lisa noticed Claire standing near the service entrance.
No gun visible now.
Evelyn sat beside her, unharmed but terrified.
Lisa looked back at Rebecca.
“Where’s my father buried?”
Rebecca answered calmly.
“Nowhere.”
Lisa’s heart slammed.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Your father is alive.”
The ballroom seemed to tilt.
Lisa forced herself not to react.
Rebecca continued.
“He betrayed me.”
“He betrayed Sentinel.”
“He believed institutions mattered.”
“He believed law mattered.”
“He believed exposing everyone would somehow restore honor.”
Lisa heard contempt in her mother’s voice.
“Where is he?”
Rebecca smiled again.
“That depends on what you do for me.”
Claire suddenly spoke.
“Don’t.”
Rebecca turned.
Claire raised a pistol.
Lisa did not move.
Neither did Rebecca.
Claire’s hand trembled.
“I brought Lisa here because you promised James Bennett would be released.”
Rebecca laughed.
“Claire still believes promises matter.”
Lisa stared at her best friend.
“You knew my father was alive.”
Claire’s eyes filled with shame.
“For three years.”
Lisa swallowed the betrayal.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Rebecca had him.”
“And Daniel?”
“I was trying to find him too.”
Rebecca interrupted.
“This is tedious.”
She lifted one hand.
Four armed men appeared behind the balcony rail.
Claire’s weapon became useless.
Rebecca looked at Lisa.
“Your friend is not loyal to me.”
Then at Claire.
“She’s not loyal to you either.”
Claire whispered.
“I was trying to keep Lisa alive.”
Rebecca nodded.
“And occasionally you succeeded.”
Lisa finally understood Claire’s impossible position.
She had infiltrated Sentinel.
Then Sentinel had infiltrated her.
Rebecca had threatened James Bennett.
Claire had compromised Lisa’s company while secretly leaving enough evidence for Lisa to follow.
She had betrayed Lisa and protected her at the same time.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“Tonight ends all of this.”
“Give me access to Orion.”
“Let me erase Sentinel.”
“And your father walks away.”
Lisa stared at her.
“What happens to Ryan?”
Rebecca shrugged.
“Ryan was always expendable.”
“And Marcus?”
“More expendable.”
Lisa almost laughed.
Everyone Rebecca used eventually became disposable.
Then Lisa asked the question Rebecca did not expect.
“What happens to you?”
Rebecca’s smile disappeared.
Lisa took another step.
“You erase Sentinel.”
“You release Dad.”
“You abandon Ryan and Marcus.”
“And then what?”
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“You disappear again?”
Rebecca said quietly.
“I become free.”
Lisa shook her head.
“No.”
“You become accountable.”
Rebecca raised her hand.
One of the balcony gunmen aimed at Claire.
Then a voice echoed through Lisa’s hidden transmitter.
Captain Cole.
“Movement outside.”
Suddenly every light in the ballroom went dark.
A single shot exploded.
When emergency lights came on three seconds later, Rebecca was gone.
Claire was bleeding from the arm.
Evelyn was screaming.
And on the ballroom floor lay a photograph that had not been there before.
It showed James Bennett.
Lisa’s father.
