Chapter 11 - FORT HALDEN

Fort Halden sat beneath forty miles of winter-gray sky in rural Virginia.

Officially, it had been decommissioned.

Unofficially, several underground sections remained usable.

Captain Cole’s convoy arrived before noon.

Lisa came despite every argument against it.

Daniel came too.

James remained under protection.

Claire was temporarily cooperating.

Ryan was back in restraints.

The entrance to the underground facility had been disguised as a collapsed maintenance bunker.

Inside, old concrete corridors descended beneath the former base.

The walls smelled of rust and damp stone.

Daniel walked beside Lisa.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked at him.

Daniel almost smiled.

“People who say they’re okay in places like this get careless.”

They reached a steel door.

Thomas Morgan’s ledger provided the code.

Claire entered it.

Nothing happened.

Lisa looked at her.

“Wrong code?”

Claire shook her head.

“Missing component.”

Ryan spoke from behind them.

“Date.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at Lisa.

“Your birthday.”

Lisa entered it.

The lock opened.

She hated what that meant.

Her life had been embedded in Sentinel systems before she even understood what Sentinel was.

Beyond the door was a massive underground archive.

Boxes.

Servers.

Old film reels.

Bank records.

Military documents.

Forty years of secrets.

Captain Cole stood silently.

“This could put hundreds of people in prison.”

Claire corrected him.

“Thousands.”

Then the lights came on.

Rebecca’s voice echoed through speakers.

“Welcome home.”

Steel doors slammed behind them.

Cole’s team raised weapons.

Rebecca appeared on an elevated platform.

Marcus stood beside her.

His hands were tied.

For the first time since Lisa had known him, Marcus looked small.

Rebecca held a pistol near his shoulder.

“You always were greedy, Marcus.”

Marcus shouted toward Ryan.

“Get me out of here.”

Ryan stepped forward despite his restraints.

“Mom—”

Lisa looked at him sharply.

Ryan corrected himself.

“Rebecca.”

But everyone had heard it.

Lisa stared.

Rebecca smiled.

“You never told her?”

Lisa felt the truth before anyone said it.

Ryan looked sick.

Rebecca spoke almost gently.

“Marcus did not raise Ryan.”

“He supervised him.”

Lisa’s voice was barely audible.

“What are you saying?”

Rebecca looked directly at her daughter.

“Ryan is my son.”

Silence swallowed the bunker.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Lisa stepped backward.

Rebecca had given birth after staging her death.

Ryan was Lisa’s half-brother.

The marriage had not merely been arranged.

It had been engineered between two people who shared a mother.

Ryan spoke quickly.

“I didn’t know when we met.”

Lisa stared at him.

“When did you know?”

Ryan could not answer.

That was answer enough.

Rebecca seemed almost amused.

“He discovered it three years after your wedding.”

Lisa’s stomach turned.

Three years.

Ryan had known for four years.

Four years of sleeping beside her.

Four years of pretending.

Four years of accepting her trust.

Lisa wanted to be sick.

Ryan whispered.

“I was trying to get us out.”

“You stayed.”

“I was trapped.”

“You stayed.”

Rebecca interrupted.

“Enough.”

She lifted the Orion prototype.

A small encrypted hardware module.

“Lisa opens the failsafe.”

“Daniel authenticates.”

“Then I control what gets released.”

Captain Cole raised his weapon.

Rebecca pressed the pistol against Marcus’s neck.

“No.”

Marcus started begging.

Not proudly.

Not like the man who had struck Lisa.

Like a frightened old man whose illusions of power had finally disappeared.

Rebecca looked at Lisa.

“Choose.”

“Your evidence.”

“Or Marcus’s life.”

Lisa looked at Marcus.

Then at Ryan.

Then at the woman who had manipulated all of them.

And Lisa realized Rebecca had made one fatal mistake.

She still believed Lisa would play by the choices she was given.

Lisa smiled.

“No.”

Then the entire underground archive began uploading itself.

Rebecca’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Lisa looked toward Claire.

Claire smiled through tears.

“Nothing.”

Daniel raised his wrist.

A green light blinked on his watch.

May you like

James Bennett had activated the failsafe remotely.

And suddenly Rebecca was no longer controlling the room.
