Chapter 7 - PHASE BLACK

The safe house was underground.
No windows.
No personal phones.
No connection to public networks.
Lisa sat at a metal table while Noah rebuilt a clean Orion environment on isolated servers.
Daniel paced behind him.
Captain Cole coordinated raids against four Sentinel-linked charities.
By midnight, thirty-one people had been detained.
But Rebecca was nowhere.
Neither was Claire.
Ryan remained in custody.
Marcus had stopped talking entirely.
Lisa read every Sentinel document they had recovered.
The more she learned, the clearer her mother became.
Rebecca Bennett had spent decades exploiting one simple truth.
People hid terrible decisions behind respectable institutions.
Charities.
Families.
Military traditions.
Companies.
Rebecca built systems that made corruption look ordinary.
A monthly donation.
A gala ticket.
A consulting fee.
A family allowance.
Nothing suspicious individually.
Everything connected underneath.
Lisa finally understood why the ceremonial baton mattered.
Marcus had not simply attacked her in anger.
The baton belonged to an Army unit whose former officers formed Sentinel’s original leadership.
He had used it because he believed Lisa was beneath him.
A civilian.
A daughter-in-law.
A source of money.
Someone who would keep paying.
He had been wrong.
At 1:14 in the morning Noah broke into the encrypted gala files.
“There.”
A floor plan appeared.
The gala had been advertised as a veterans’ charity dinner at a luxury hotel outside Washington.
But the private guest list included defense executives, former officers, technology investors and three foreign intermediaries.
Lisa studied the financial instructions.
“They’re not laundering money.”
Daniel leaned over.
“What?”
“They’re consolidating.”
Hundreds of smaller accounts were scheduled to transfer into one master trust during the gala.
Nearly 1.8 billion dollars.
Captain Cole stared.
“Where does it go?”
Noah traced the destination.
Then frowned.
“It doesn’t.”
Lisa understood.
“They’re destroying the trail.”
Orion could identify Sentinel only while the network remained distributed.
Once the money consolidated and passed through a sequence of protected legal trusts, the historical links would become almost impossible to prove.
The gala was a cleanup operation.
Phase Black.
Captain Cole began issuing orders.
Then Lisa noticed a familiar string buried in the destination code.
Her company’s internal encryption certificate.
Someone planned to route the final transfer through Bennett Cyber Defense.
That would make Lisa appear responsible.
Again.
Rebecca was building another exit.
Daniel’s phone replacement unit flashed with an emergency secure message.
Only one person knew the address.
Claire.
The message contained no words.
Just a photograph.
Rebecca stood in a dark room beside a seated woman.
Lisa zoomed in.
The woman was alive.
Terrified.
Bound to a chair.
Lisa’s breath stopped.
It was Evelyn.
Ryan’s mother.
The woman Lisa had once considered family.
Beneath the image was a location.
The gala hotel.
And one sentence.
IF LISA WANTS THE TRUTH ABOUT HER FATHER, SHE COMES ALONE.
Captain Cole shook his head.
“No.”
Lisa continued staring at the photograph.
Daniel touched her arm.
“It’s a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then we don’t go.”
Lisa looked at him.
“No.”
She enlarged the background.
A reflection in the window showed something Rebecca had not meant to reveal.
May you like
Claire was standing behind the camera.
And Claire was holding a gun against Rebecca’s back.
