Chapter 19 - THE CHILD IN PLAIN SIGHT

Her name was Sophie Hale.

Six years old.

Lisa knew her.

Everyone at Bennett Cyber Defense knew her.

Sophie was Claire’s goddaughter.

Claire sometimes brought her to company events.

Christmas parties.

Family picnics.

The summer coding program.

Lisa had helped Sophie build a toy robot six months earlier.

Now the records claimed Ryan was her biological father.

Claire stared at the screen.

“No.”

Lisa turned.

“You knew her mother?”

Claire nodded.

“My cousin Anna.”

“Anna died four years ago.”

“Car accident.”

Daniel and Lisa exchanged a look.

They had learned to distrust convenient deaths.

DNA testing was arranged immediately.

Ryan was informed.

His reaction was genuine shock.

Or seemed genuine.

“I never had a child with Anna Hale.”

Lisa watched through the interview glass.

Captain Cole asked.

“Did you know her?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“We dated briefly before Lisa.”

Lisa closed her eyes.

Another hidden connection.

DNA results arrived six hours later.

Ryan was Sophie’s father.

Claire sat alone in the hallway when Lisa found her.

“She never told me.”

Claire whispered.

“Anna never told anyone.”

Lisa sat beside her.

“Where’s Sophie now?”

“With a protected foster family.”

Claire nodded.

“Good.”

But Lisa understood Project Daughter’s real cruelty.

It did not end with exposing the past.

It threatened to recreate itself through children who had no idea what adults had planned for them.

Ryan asked for custody.

Federal investigators refused while his criminal role remained unresolved.

Claire requested temporary guardianship.

Lisa supported her.

For the first time, Lisa saw Claire’s loyalty clearly.

Not perfect.

Not clean.

But real.

They visited Sophie under supervision.

The little girl did not understand why so many adults suddenly wanted to ask about her mother.

She only knew Claire cried when hugging her.

Then Sophie looked at Lisa.

“Are you Miss Lisa?”

“Yes.”

“Mom had a picture of you.”

Lisa’s chest tightened.

“Your mom knew me?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said you were the lady who would know what to do if the soldiers came.”

Every adult in the room went still.

Claire crouched.

“What soldiers?”

Sophie shrugged.

“The men who visited our old house.”

Lisa asked gently.

“Did your mom give you anything?”

Sophie thought.

Then reached beneath her shirt.

A small metal key hung on a string.

Claire gasped.

Thomas Morgan’s family crest was etched into it.

Sophie said her mother told her never to remove it.

Noah identified the key as a physical encryption token.

Another Sentinel archive.

But this one was different.

It had been given to Anna Hale.

Ryan’s former girlfriend.

Claire’s cousin.

Sophie’s mother.

The key opened a secure deposit box in Baltimore.

Inside were letters.

Anna had discovered Project Daughter shortly before her death.

She had been gathering evidence to protect Sophie.

The final letter was addressed to Lisa.

Lisa unfolded it.

If you are reading this, they failed to make you one of them.

Do not let them make Sophie one either.

Lisa stopped.

At the bottom was another sentence.

Ryan knew I was pregnant.

He promised to protect her.

Lisa looked up.

Ryan had lied again.

May you like

But the final line was worse.

He told Rebecca where we were.
