Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED TWICE

Lisa Bennett had spent most of her adult life believing fear was something that could be measured.
You found the threat.
You identified the vulnerability.
You closed the gap.
That was how cybersecurity worked.
But nothing in her training had prepared her for the photograph Military Police Captain Nathan Cole placed on the kitchen table just after sunrise.
The security image had been pulled from Lisa’s office building twenty-three minutes earlier.
A woman stood behind Lisa’s desk.
Silver hair.
Black coat.
Straight posture.
One hand resting on the leather chair Lisa used during board meetings.
Captain Cole tapped the photograph.
“Do you recognize her?”
Lisa’s bruised ribs screamed when she leaned forward.
She stared at the woman’s face.
At first, there was only a vague familiarity.
Then she saw the narrow eyes.
The slight bend in the nose.
The tiny scar beneath the left eyebrow.
Lisa stopped breathing.
“No.”
Ryan was sitting across the room with two investigators beside him.
Marcus had already been taken outside in handcuffs after trying to claim the baton strike had been an accident.
Ryan had said almost nothing.
But the moment Lisa whispered the woman’s name, his head snapped up.
“Rebecca Bennett.”
Captain Cole watched him carefully.
Lisa turned toward her ex-husband.
“You know that name?”
Ryan said nothing.
Rebecca Bennett had been Lisa’s mother.
She had supposedly died in a highway accident when Lisa was eight years old.
Lisa remembered the funeral.
She remembered the closed casket.
She remembered her father standing beside the grave while rain soaked his black suit.
Most of all, she remembered her older brother Daniel holding her hand and promising he would never leave her.
Six years later, Daniel disappeared.
Now the woman who had been declared dead twenty-seven years earlier was inside Lisa’s company headquarters.
And someone had used Lisa’s credentials to let her in.
Captain Cole’s phone buzzed.
He read the message and his expression hardened.
“We found another problem.”
Lisa looked at him.
“What?”
“The access badge wasn’t cloned.”
He placed the screen in front of her.
“It was issued legally.”
Lisa read the authorization record.
Her stomach tightened.
The badge had been approved by the chief administrative officer of Bennett Cyber Defense.
Her best friend.
Claire Morgan.
Lisa slowly looked toward Ryan.
He finally lifted his eyes.
“I tried to warn you about Claire.”
Lisa laughed once despite the pain.
“No, Ryan.”
She pointed toward the officers standing around him.
“You watched your father hit me and stared at your phone.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to pretend you were protecting me now.”
Captain Cole interrupted.
“There’s more.”
He slid another page across the table.
The authorization request for Rebecca’s badge had been submitted three months before Lisa married Ryan.
Lisa stared at the date.
Her marriage had happened seven years ago.
Which meant Rebecca had been planning access to Lisa’s company long before Lisa ever knew Ryan existed.
Then Captain Cole said the sentence that made the room disappear around her.
“Lisa, your mother didn’t come back from the dead.”
He looked directly at her.
“She never died.”
And before Lisa could ask the question burning through her mind, an officer rushed in from outside.
“Captain, we found blood in Bennett Cyber Defense.”
Lisa rose despite the pain.
Captain Cole stopped him.
“Whose?”
The officer swallowed.
“We don’t know yet.”

Then he added one detail.
“But we found Daniel Bennett’s military identification card beside it.”
