Chapter 17 - THE MAN BEHIND THE SYSTEM

Thomas Morgan chose a public place.

A veterans’ memorial overlooking the Potomac.

No abandoned warehouse.

No underground bunker.

No weapons visible.

Just an eighty-year-old man sitting on a bench.

Captain Cole positioned agents nearby.

Claire and Lisa approached together.

Thomas stood.

Claire stopped ten feet away.

He smiled.

“My girl.”

Claire slapped him.

The sound echoed across the stone walkway.

Thomas touched his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

Claire’s voice shook.

“You deserve more.”

Lisa watched him carefully.

Thomas looked like someone’s grandfather.

That was what made men like him dangerous.

They rarely looked like monsters.

They looked respectable.

Thomas sat again.

“Sentinel is finished.”

Lisa remained standing.

“Then why are we here?”

“Because Rebecca misunderstood the original purpose.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Here we go.”

Thomas ignored her.

He claimed Sentinel began as a contingency network during a period when officials feared certain operations could not survive political oversight.

Money had to move quietly.

Sources had to be protected.

People had to be influenced.

Then money became power.

Power became entitlement.

Thomas admitted he allowed it.

Lisa asked the simplest question.

“How many people died?”

Thomas looked toward the river.

“I don’t know.”

“That means enough that you stopped counting.”

He did not argue.

Thomas offered them the final archive.

Not financial records.

Operational decisions.

The archive could identify who ordered specific murders, disappearances and intimidation campaigns.

Including James Bennett’s attempted assassination.

Including Daniel’s disappearance.

Including the investigator Daniel tried to contact as a teenager.

Claire looked at her father.

“Where?”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Inside Orion.”

Lisa frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

Thomas explained.

Years ago he embedded a dormant encrypted partition inside the mathematical framework James later reused.

When Lisa created Orion, she unknowingly reconstructed the access pathway.

The system was not merely capable of discovering Sentinel.

It contained the key to Sentinel’s oldest archive.

Lisa stared.

“My company existed because you wanted it to.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Your talent was yours.”

“The path beneath it was ours.”

Lisa hated the distinction.

Thomas handed her a small paper card.

On it was a twelve-word recovery phrase.

Claire asked.

“What do you want in exchange?”

“Nothing.”

She laughed.

“You have never done anything for nothing.”

Thomas looked at his daughter.

“I want you to know I was ashamed.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Not enough to come home.”

“No.”

“Not enough to confess.”

“No.”

“Not enough to be my father.”

Thomas’s voice broke.

“No.”

Claire stepped back.

Captain Cole approached.

“Thomas Morgan, you are under arrest.”

Thomas offered his wrists.

No resistance.

Before Cole placed the cuffs on him, Thomas looked at Lisa.

“Open the archive.”

“Every monster has convinced himself he was protecting something.”

“Do not believe us.”

“Believe the records.”

For once, Lisa agreed.

Back at Bennett Cyber Defense, Noah entered the recovery phrase.

Orion opened a hidden partition.

Thousands of files appeared.

Lisa searched one name.

JAMES BENNETT.

Then another.

REBECCA BENNETT.

Then MARCUS.

Then RYAN.

Finally, she searched herself.

LISA BENNETT.

One file appeared.

Creation date.

Thirty-six years earlier.

Before Lisa was born.

The title was only two words.

PROJECT DAUGHTER.
