Chapter 5: The Secret They Buried

I remember the exact moment my world changed.

Not when Vanessa admitted the fake pregnancy.

Not when the pillow was discovered.

Not even when I learned someone had been watching me.

It was when Alessandro looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Concern.

Real concern.

And somehow that scared me more.

“Why would someone watch me?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was afraid of the possibilities.

The security officer placed the files on the table.

“Miss Bennett, these recordings began shortly after you started working here.”

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because nobody knew who I was.”

Alessandro looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

I swallowed.

“I wasn’t supposed to work here.”

Everyone became silent.

“What?”

I looked down.

“When I applied, I used my married name. Bennett. Before that…”

I stopped.

I had spent years trying to bury my past.

But now the past was digging itself back up.

“Before that, I was Clara Hayes.”

The name meant nothing to most people.

But Alessandro reacted.

His face changed.

“You’re Thomas Hayes’ daughter?”

I froze.

“How do you know my father?”

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly I understood.

My life was not accidentally connected to this family.

Someone had known.

Someone had planned.

“My father worked for your family,” I whispered.

Alessandro stared at me.

“What did he do?”

“He was your father’s accountant.”

The room became ice cold.

Because everyone knew the name.

Thomas Hayes.

The man who disappeared fifteen years ago.

The man accused of stealing millions from the Moretti empire.

The man whose reputation was destroyed overnight.

The man everyone believed betrayed Alessandro’s father.

Except me.

Because I knew the truth.

“My father didn’t steal anything.”

Alessandro said nothing.

“He was framed.”

His eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?”

“Because I was there.”

A silence followed.

“I was fourteen years old.”

My voice shook.

“The night my father disappeared, he told me something.”

I looked at Alessandro.

“He said if anything happened to him, I should never trust anyone connected to the Moretti family.”

The words hit him.

Hard.

“Why did you work here then?”

I looked at Emma.

“Because I needed money.”

That was only half the truth.

The other half was harder.

“I wanted to know what really happened.”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“You came here to investigate me?”

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“I came here because I thought your family destroyed mine.”

For the first time that night…

Alessandro Moretti looked shocked.

Then the lights went out.

The entire mansion fell into darkness.

Emma woke up screaming.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Someone was inside.

Someone who should not have been there.

Alessandro immediately moved in front of us.

The security team reached for their weapons.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A familiar voice.

A voice Vanessa recognized.

“No one was supposed to find the second pillow.”

Everyone froze.

Because the person standing in the doorway…

May you like

Was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been working inside the Moretti mansion for years.
