Chapter 4: The Man In The Hallway

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not the guests.

Not the security team.

Not even Vanessa.

Everyone was waiting for someone to laugh and say it was another misunderstanding.

But nobody did.

Because children did not usually invent details like that.

Especially not children who had spent three years quietly observing a mansion full of secrets.

Alessandro lowered himself again until he was at Emma’s eye level.

“Sweetheart.”

His voice softened.

“What scary man?”

Emma looked toward the hallway.

The same hallway where hundreds of expensive shoes had walked that evening.

The same hallway where servants moved silently.

The same hallway where secrets disappeared.

“He was angry,” Emma whispered.

“Angry about what?”

She squeezed my hand.

“He told the pretty lady the baby had to come soon.”

The entire room changed.

Vanessa’s face lost its color.

Only for a second.

But Alessandro saw it.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

“What man?” Alessandro asked.

Emma frowned, trying to remember.

“He had a black watch.”

Nobody spoke.

A black watch.

It sounded meaningless.

Until Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.

Alessandro noticed.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“You know who she’s talking about.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too automatically.

Alessandro stood.

“Search the house.”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You can’t just accuse people based on a child’s imagination!”

Alessandro turned toward her.

“And you can’t fake a pregnancy in my home and expect me to ignore evidence.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Because Alessandro Moretti never raised his voice.

He didn’t need to.

His calm was what frightened people.

The security team immediately moved.

Guests were escorted into separate rooms.

Phones were collected.

The ballroom that had been prepared for an engagement celebration became an investigation scene.

And in the middle of it all stood Vanessa Cole.

Alone.

For the first time that night, she looked exactly what she really was.

Not a future Moretti wife.

Not a woman carrying an heir.

Just someone whose entire world was collapsing.

An hour later, the mansion was almost silent.

Rain continued hitting the windows.

The guests had been moved to the library while security searched every corner of the property.

I sat in a small room near the kitchen with Emma sleeping against my shoulder.

I wanted to leave.

Every part of me wanted to take my daughter and disappear.

Because this was no longer about a fake pregnancy.

This was bigger.

Dangerously bigger.

My husband’s death.

A hidden investigation.

A mysterious man.

The Moretti family.

All connected.

The door opened.

I looked up.

Alessandro stood there.

Without the crowd around him, he looked different.

Not weaker.

Just more human.

“Is she asleep?”

I nodded.

“She was scared.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

Something about those two words surprised me.

Because he did know.

People like Alessandro were surrounded by fear every day.

But maybe he had forgotten what it felt like for someone small and innocent to experience it.

“She saved you tonight,” he said.

I looked at him.

“She told the truth.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“She noticed the truth.”

That was different.

And somehow more important.

He looked at Emma.

“She sees things adults ignore.”

I almost smiled.

“That’s because adults are usually too busy pretending.”

A strange expression crossed his face.

Almost amusement.

Almost sadness.

Then it disappeared.

“Clara.”

“Yes?”

“I owe you an apology.”

I froze.

Powerful men did not apologize to women like me.

Not in my experience.

“For what?”

“For not seeing what was happening inside my own house.”

I looked away.

“You trusted the wrong person.”

His silence answered everything.

Two hours later, the security team found the second pillow.

But it was not hidden in Vanessa’s room.

It was inside a storage closet near the east staircase.

The exact place where Emma had seen it.

Alessandro stood over it.

The pillow was different.

Not a pregnancy belly.

A smaller one.

Used for photographs.

Inside the closet was also a camera.

A hidden camera.

The security officer looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Moretti…”

“What?”

“We checked the footage.”

“And?”

The officer hesitated.

“Someone has been recording private conversations inside this house for months.”

My blood went cold.

Alessandro stared at the camera.

“Who installed it?”

“We don’t know.”

“Find out.”

The officer nodded.

Then he added:

“There’s more.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“What?”

The officer handed him another file.

“This camera was not placed to watch Miss Cole.”

Silence.

“Then who?”

May you like

The officer looked directly at me.

“It was watching Miss Bennett.”
